Bird species have been found to have increased in Chitwan district, where the world heritage listed Chitwan National Park is located, according to a bird census.
The census of the bird species led by the Bird Education Society, Chitwan, has recorded 46 new species of birds in the district, said Chairman of the Society, Basu Bidari.
With this, the number of bird species in the district has reached 615 from 569. However, the total population of the bird was found to have decreased of late, Bidari said.
For the bird census, the Society also visited the Mahabharat region of Chitwan this year. Earlier, the ornithologists used to count the bird species in the National Park area only.
The new bird species are believed to have come from Pakistan, Myanmar, Bhutan, Tibet, India, and Afghanistan, said ornithologist Dr. Hem Sagar Baral.
Nepal is home to 872 bird species and many of them are enlisted in the endangered list, Baral added.
