Trek up to Mt. Manaslu base camp, cross the Larkya La pass and admire the rich biodiversity of the region

Manaslu circuit trek begins by sightseeing of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu to trekking in the beautiful Manaslu region. While on the trip we get to marvel at the magnificent views of Mt. Manaslu (8163m), the eight tallest mountain in the world, coupled with a chance to witness the rich local heritage and biological diversity of the region.

The highest point in this trek is the ‘Larkya La Pass’ which is widely believed to be one of the most dramatic pass crossing the Himalayas. Like all Himalayan Glacier’s itineraries this trek also ensures adequate time for proper acclimatization. Much of the trek involves walking on mountain trails, and is within the capabilities of people with good cardiovascular fitness. Still, it is important to note that trekking at altitudes above 3,000m/10,000ft is more demanding on the body than walking at low elevations.

With its remoteness and secluded solidarity, it is believed to be in stark contrast to trekking in the Annapurna region making ‘Manaslu Circuit Trek’ a first choice for those who prefer to become one with nature.

From the hot spring, we climb over another ridge, then cross the Budhi Gandaki on a suspension bridge. At this juncture, we climb on a wide, well-crafted staircase, then across a landslide and over a ridge to Dobhan. Upon crossing a suspension bridge over the Yaru Khola, we climb the stone stairs and then drop to the river and again climb more stone stairs to Tharo Bharyang. Crossing the west bank of the Budhi Gandaki, we climb over a ridge, trek along the river and then climb towards the village of Jagat. Overnight in Jagat.

Jagat to Deng
Deng 1,804m / 5,919ft

We begin today’s trek by climbing over a rocky ridge to Salleri, and then descend to Sirdibas. The valley widens a bit as the trail continues up to Ghatta Khola. We further continue walking upstream to a long suspension bridge in Philim, a large Gurung village. The trail turns north just above the lowest house in the village and stays on a fairly level trail as it crosses millet fields to Ekle Bhatti. The route now enters a steep, uninhabited gorge. At this point, we descend to the grassy land slopes, cross the Budhi Gandaki, then trek along the west bank for a while, then cross to the east bank and then back again. As we continue through the trail the valley widens and we pass through bamboo forests to the Deng Khola.  Upon crossing the Khola, we reach the tiny village of Deng. Overnight in Deng.

Deng to Namrung
Namrung 2,630m / 8,629ft

After a brief walk beyond Deng, we cross the Budhi Gandaki and climb to Rana at 1910m. From the bridge, we climb a bit to join a trail from Bhi, then head west up the Budhi Gandaki valley. The trail also passes through forests and mani where we turn towards a corner that contours to Ghap. Even though there is another route, we take the route through Prok village. Prok village has a viewpoint for a beautiful sight of Siringi Himal. We further cross the Budi Gandaki several times today and come across several gompas en route. The trail follows the river upstream through a dense forest. After crossing the river at an impressive spot where it thunders down a narrow gorge, the forest becomes less dense and the trail is fine again. The pleasant walk continues and after a last steep climb we reach Namrung. Overnight in Namrung.

We enjoy extraordianary views of Mt. Manasly from Lho village and also explore the famous Ribung Gompa. In Shyala village we will be surrounded by high mountains like Himal Chuli and Peak 29 (Ngadi Chuli) to the left, Manaslu and large glaciers straight ahead, and other snow summits to the right, and at the far end stands Ganesh Himal. Samagaon - Pungyen gompa - Samagaon
Samagaon 3,530m / 11,582ft

We spend the day at Samagaon both for rest and acclimatization. Today, we get acquainted with the rich Sherpa culture. We enjoy the sight of thousands of mani stones with Buddhist texts and pictures and the Sherpa women clad in traditional clothes and ornaments. On a little hill near the Sama village is an old Gompa (Pungyen Gompa), a monastery with great views of the glacier. It is named after Manaslu, Pungyen means bracelet, a good description of the two peaks. It was destroyed a year after the first unsuccessful Japanese attempt to climb Manaslu. The locals believed that the climb angered the gods, and when the Japanese came back a year later they met with a lot of resistance that they had to give up their attempt. They were finally successful in 1959. Overnight in Samagaon.

After a short climb, we reach a valley on the north side of the Larkya Glaciers from where we can enjoy great views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. Finally, we walk across moraines of the glacier, making a gradual ascent which becomes steeper only in the last section of the pass. From the pass, there are outstanding views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kangguru and the huge Annapurna II. It is a longer day than usual to Bimtang, but to walk into these low pastures with the evening mist coming in with Mt. Manaslu looming close by is an overwhelming experience. Overnight in Bimthang.

From a ridge at Bimthang, we can enjoy great views of Mt. Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, Himlung Himal and Cheo Himal. We descend further and cross a high pasture (Sangure Kharka) followed by a bridge over Dudh Khola. We walk through rhododendron forest and follow a trail through a narrow valley until we reach the highest cultivated land of the valley at Karche, 2785 meters. We pass across fields before making a steep climb over a ridge. The trail comes off the ridge in a big, sweeping arc to the river bank at 2580m. A short distance beyond is the village of Gho. Due to yesterday’s tiredness we might take an overnight rest at Gho but better lodges are available at Tilije, so Himalayan Glacier recommends we stay at Tilije. Overnight in Tilije Village.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Manaslu Circuit Trek costs around $2,100 USD per person for a fully guided package from Kathmandu, including permits, licensed guide, teahouse accommodation, and meals on trail. Group size and service level are the main factors affecting the final price.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is rated Grade 4 (moderately strenuous) more demanding than the Annapurna Circuit Trek but achievable for physically fit trekkers without technical climbing skills. Expect 5 to 8 hours of walking per day at altitudes reaching 5,106m (16,752ft) at Larkya La Pass.

The best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek is October and November in autumn and March to May in spring, when weather is stable, skies are clear, and Larkya La Pass (5,106m / 16,752ft) is safely passable. October is widely considered the single best month on this trail.

The monsoon season (June to August) brings landslide risk and poor visibility. Winter (December to February) is possible but cold and prone to snow closure at the pass.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek takes 14 days from Kathmandu and back, covering approximately 177km (110 miles) with 11 to 13 active trekking days and built-in acclimatization stops. Daily stages average 5 to 6 hours of walking, with the Larkya La Pass crossing day requiring 8 to 10 hours from Dharamsala (4,460m / 14,632ft).

The highest point on the Manaslu Circuit Trek is approximately 5,160m (16,929ft) near Manaslu Base Camp, with Larkya La Pass at 5,106m (16,752ft) being the highest trail crossing. The trek begins at 1,350m (4,429ft) near Arughat, a total elevation gain of over 3,700m (12,139ft).

A mandatory acclimatization day at Samagaon (3,520m / 11,549ft), including a day hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,480m / 14,698ft), is built into all responsible itineraries to reduce altitude sickness risk.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek requires three mandatory permits: the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. All must be arranged through a government-registered trekking agency individual applications are not accepted.

The RAP costs $100 USD per person for the first 7 days in autumn and $75 USD in spring, with additional days charged at $15 USD each. Checkpoints along the route are active and non-compliant trekkers can be turned back.

No, solo guideless trekking on the Manaslu Circuit is prohibited by Nepal government regulation. All trekkers must travel in a minimum group of two and be accompanied by at least one licensed guide. Permits are issued only through registered agencies, making independent trekking legally impossible. Read our full article on Manaslu Trek Without Guide.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek requires good to strong physical fitness, you should comfortably walk 5 to 8 hours per day on steep mountain terrain for up to 9 consecutive days at altitudes reaching 5,106m (16,752ft). No technical climbing skills are needed, but aerobic endurance is essential.

A structured 8 to 12 week training programme combining cardio, weighted hill walks, and strength conditioning is strongly recommended before departure.

Larkya La Pass at 5,106m (16,752ft) is the highest and most demanding section of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The crossing takes 8 to 10 hours, beginning before dawn from Dharamsala (4,460m / 14,632ft) across glacial moraine and snowfields before a steep descent to Bimthang (3,720m / 12,205ft).

Solid acclimatization gained at Samagaon (3,520m / 11,549ft) is essential before attempting the pass. Trekkers should carry trekking poles, warm layers, and sufficient food and water for a full day above 4,500m (14,764ft).

Trekkers on the Manaslu Circuit Trek stay in teahouses, locally run guesthouses offering basic private or dormitory rooms with meals included. Comfort levels range from reasonably standard in lower villages to sparse stone shelters at the pre-pass camp of Dharamsala (4,460m / 14,632ft).

A sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C (14°F) is essential for the entire route. Advance booking through your agency is recommended during peak October and April seasons.

Yes, altitude sickness is a genuine risk on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, particularly above 3,500m (11,483ft). The trek reaches Larkya La Pass at 5,106m (16,752ft), where Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), HAPE, and HACE can develop. Proper acclimatization and pacing are the most effective prevention.

If symptoms worsen rather than improve after rest, immediate descent is the only safe response. Himalayan Glacier guides are trained in altitude sickness recognition and emergency protocols.

Teahouses along the Manaslu Circuit Trek serve hot meals throughout the route, with Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry) as the staple trail food. Most menus also include noodles, Tibetan bread, soups, fried rice, momos, oatmeal, and hot drinks.

Vegetarian options are consistently available. Food variety is widest in larger villages like Samagaon (3,520m / 11,549ft) and narrows to basics at remote high-altitude stops. Prices increase with elevation.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is more remote, less crowded, and more culturally immersive than the Everest Base Camp Trek, with both reaching similar maximum altitudes and demanding comparable fitness levels. The key differences are trail access, infrastructure quality, permit restrictions, and the volume of trekkers you will encounter.

The Manaslu region’s Tibetan-influenced Nubri villages, ancient monasteries, and regulated visitor numbers deliver an off-the-beaten-path experience that EBC, despite its iconic status simply cannot match.

Packing for the Manaslu Circuit Trek requires a layering system for conditions ranging from valley heat at 1,350m (4,429ft) to sub-zero cold at Larkya La Pass (5,106m / 16,752ft). Waterproof trekking boots, a -10°C (14°F) sleeping bag, trekking poles, and altitude medication are non-negotiable essentials.

Most trekkers hire a porter through their agency (10 to 15kg baggage limit) to keep the personal daypack light, a significant advantage on long high-altitude climbing days.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is not recommended as a first Himalayan trekking experience due to its Grade 4 difficulty, restricted-area status, Larkya La Pass crossing at 5,106m (16,752ft), and limited medical infrastructure. Fit beginners with a serious pre-trek training programme of 10 to 12 weeks can complete it successfully.
