As our flight nears Bhutan, we can enjoy amazing views of the Himalayas including the sacred Jumolhari and Jichu Drake peaks. At the airport, we will be greeted by a representative from Himalayan Glacier who will take us to our hotel. Today, we will visit Rinpung Dzong which was built in 1646 and now houses the district Monastic Body and government administrative offices of Paro Dzongkhag. We will also visit Kichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the country and Drugyal Dzong, built in 1646 to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders during the 1600s. Overnight in Paro.
After breakfast, we hike for 4 -5 hours to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, which is Bhutan’s most famous monastery situated at 3,180 meters. Guru Rinpoche (spiritual master) is said to have flown on the back of a tigress to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery now stands. Lunch will be served in the Cafeteria Restaurant, located about halfway up the mountain. After having explored the monastery, we hike down to the valley floor. This afternoon, we will drive to Thimphu, and spend the night.
In the morning, we visit Memorial Chorten (built in memory of the third King of Bhutan who reigned from 1952-1972), nunnery temple, mini zoo to see Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Today, we also visit other landmarks of Thimphu including the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, Bhutanese traditional painting school, folk heritage museum, the majestic Tashichho Dzong and the traditional paper factory. However, some of the landmarks are closed in the weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). Therefore, if we are in Thimphu during the weekends, we explore the Weekend Market instead. Overnight in Thimphu.
Today we bid farewell to the tiny Himalayan Kingdom and her friendly people. After early breakfast, we leave Thimpu for Paro airport which will take us around 1 hour. Druk Air generally departs in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions. Therefore, after taking breakfast, we will be taken to the airport in the morning for final departure.

My wife and I travelled to Bhutan for 5 days in the end of March. From booking to final departure Himalayan glacier had our back! Their staff went above and beyond to ensure we had time of our life. Vidya helped us in booking the flights from Delhi to Bhutan and back, something not mentioned in their package so I am assuming they don't do that normally. But I was just not able to book the flights online using Drukair's website and Vidya came to rescue! The driver and guide in Bhutan went above and beyond in the same way. They even took us to hospital when we had dreaded food poisoning and we were okay in one evening! They were there for us all the time and we felt as if we were travelling with family friends and not tour operators! The hotels all had amazing views and we felt they were hand picked for us!Nice weather, good time to visit (as Vidya informed us), pre-trip information was useful and helped us a lot.
Thanks Himalayan Glacier for a wonderful trip!
The name of the trip describes it, it was a short trip but get to know and do all the basics of Bhutan, great guide and driver and the way it was planned let me use the time and not wasting it since is was a short stay, I would recommend doing this trip if you are short of time but I would definitely recommend taking more time in this beautiful country.Show more
I had an amazing time in Bhutan. Everything was so well organized, the guide and the driver made it extremely easy and comfortable throughout our stay. They were also very flexible about our schedule, they didn't mind staying late with us. The car they used was new and quite spacious, made the journey everywhere very comfortable. Both hotels we stayed in were very clean and comfortable, especially the one in Thimpu. All in all, 5 stars service, I was very impressed.Show more
