Trek in the Langtang region, climb Yala Peak, reach Gosaikunda, and trek in the beautiful Helambu region of Nepal

Yala Peak Climb with Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek begins in Kathmandu with sightseeing of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Next, we drive to Syabrubesi and begin trekking from there.  We trek through forests, small villages, Kenjin Gompa before reaching the base camp of Yala Peak. We begin climbing the peak from the sixth day of our itinerary and summit on the seventh. Yala Peak (5550m) is considered a trekking peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, and is a relatively simple, non-technical climb. From the summit, we get exceptionally good views of the Himalayas including Langtang Lirung (7246m), Dorje Lakpa (6990m), Gangchempo (6388m) and Shishapangma (8027m).  On our 16-day Yala Peak Climb with Gosainkunda and Helambu Trek, we also reach Gosaikunda which is one of three lakes in the immediate surroundings. It is also an important place of pilgrimage for Hindus. Additionally, we trek in the beautiful Helambu region with its amazing landscape complete with apple trees and colorful monasteries. After leaving Gosaikunda, we cross the Laurebina Pass and trek for one more day before driving back to Kathmandu.

The lake is surrounded by mountains on almost all sides and has a great ensemble of nine other lakes to accompany it. Every year during Janai Purnima in August, hundreds of Hindu pilgrims visit the lake for a holy bath. The large rock at the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine. Frequently Asked Questions

The Yala Peak Climb with Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek costs approximately US $2,970 per person on a twin-share basis, or about US $186 per day across the 16-day itinerary.

A single supplement of US $350 applies for trekkers who prefer a private room in Kathmandu. International flights, personal gear, and tips are not included.

Himalayan Glacier rates this trip Demanding, combining a long high-altitude trekking circuit with a non-technical peak summit above 5,500m (18,044ft). It suits fit, experienced trekkers rather than complete beginners.

The climb itself requires no advanced mountaineering skill, but the long trekking days, altitude gain, and Laurebina Pass crossing add real physical demand.

The best time to climb Yala Peak and trek to Gosaikunda and Helambu is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when skies are clearest and trails are driest.

Both seasons offer stable weather for the summit push and reliable mountain views across Langtang Lirung and Shishapangma. Winter and monsoon are not recommended due to snow and poor visibility. Read our full guide on Best Time to Trek in Nepal.

The Yala Peak Climb with Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek runs 16 days from arrival in Kathmandu to final departure, including 2 days in Kathmandu and roughly 12 days of trekking and climbing.

The itinerary covers the Langtang Valley, the Yala Peak summit attempt, Gosaikunda lake, and the Helambu region before returning to Kathmandu by road.

This trip suits physically fit beginners to Himalayan peak climbing, but not first-time trekkers. Prior high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended before attempting the Yala Peak summit.

Yala Peak is considered one of Nepal’s easiest trekking peaks and requires no technical climbing background, but the altitude, long trail days, and glacier travel above 5,000m (16,404ft) still demand solid fitness.

The maximum altitude reached is 5,500m (18,046ft) at the summit of Yala Peak on day nine of the itinerary, making this the highest point of the entire trip.

Gosaikunda lake, reached later in the trek, sits at 4,460m (14,633ft) and the Laurebina Pass crossing that follows is another significant high point.

Trekkers need a Langtang National Park entry permit, a TIMS card, and a Shivapuri National Park entry permit for the Gosaikunda-Helambu section. Yala Peak itself no longer requires a separate NMA climbing permit.

Peaks under 5,800m (19,028ft) have had their NMA royalty fee waived, though a refundable group garbage deposit still applies. Himalayan Glacier arranges all permits as part of the package.

Yes, a licensed guide is mandatory. Nepal requires all foreign trekkers to be accompanied by a government-licensed guide, and the Yala Peak summit push additionally requires a qualified climbing guide.

Himalayan Glacier provides an experienced trekking guide along with a climbing guide and support crew for the summit section, so solo or independent trekking is not an option on this route.

No prior technical climbing experience is required to summit Yala Peak. It is classed as a non-technical trekking peak, though climbers do need crampons, an ice axe, and basic snow-walking competence.

Guides provide a safety briefing and basic instruction on gear use at base camp before the summit attempt, making it a realistic first Himalayan peak for strong trekkers.

Beyond standard trekking gear, this trip requires climbing-specific equipment including crampons, an ice axe, a climbing harness, and a helmet for the Yala Peak summit day.

Read our full guide on Packing list for Trekking in Nepal. Warm, waterproof layers and a four-season sleeping bag are essential for the tented night at Yala Base Camp. Much of this technical gear can be rented in Kathmandu.

The itinerary builds in a dedicated acclimatization day at Kyanjin Gompa (3,555m/11,6663ft) before the push to Yala Base Camp, following the standard climb-high, sleep-low approach used across high-altitude Himalayan routes.

This rest day typically includes a short acclimatization hike above Kyanjin Gompa to aid the body’s adjustment before continuing toward the 5,500m/18,044ft summit.

Altitude sickness risk is real given the summit at 5,500m/18,044ft and the Gosaikunda-Laurebina Pass section above 4,400m/14,435ft, though the built-in acclimatization day and gradual ascent profile reduce the risk considerably.

Guides monitor trekkers for symptoms throughout the climb and carry standard emergency protocols. Trekkers should report any headache, nausea, or dizziness immediately rather than pushing through it.

Accommodation is in hotels in Kathmandu, standard teahouses along the Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda-Helambu trail, and tents at Yala Peak Base Camp during the summit attempt.

Teahouses offer twin-share rooms with shared bathroom facilities in most locations, while the base camp night is fully supported with tents and a foam sleeping mattress provided.

The package includes 15 breakfasts, 13 lunches, and 14 dinners, covering Nepali, Tibetan, and international dishes at teahouses along the route and freshly cooked meals prepared by the crew during the climbing section.

Meals in Kathmandu include a welcome and farewell dinner, while trail meals are typically taken at the same teahouse used for that night’s stay.

Gosaikunda is a sacred alpine lake and major Hindu pilgrimage site, while the Helambu region adds a scenic, less-crowded finish with apple orchards and traditional monasteries after the Laurebina Pass crossing.

Combining these two areas with the Langtang Valley and Yala Peak gives trekkers a more varied route than a standard Langtang-only itinerary, without significantly extending the trip.
