Reach the summit of Nirekha Peak on an exhilarating mountain adventure in the Khumbu region of Nepal

Nirekha Peak Climbing is an exciting mountain adventure that begins in Kathmandu. Next, we fly to Lukla and begin trekking from there. We trek in the famous ‘Khumbu’ region of Nepal which is also the cultural heartland of the famous ‘Sherpas’. We reach the base camp of Nirekha Peak after crossing the Cho La Pass at 5368 m. It has not been long since Nirekha Peak (6159 m) was open for climbing. Therefore, it is less crowded and provides a truly unique mountain climbing experience for seasoned climbers.  From the summit of Nirekha Peak, the magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, Cholatse, Pumori, Changri and other Himalayas are ours to marvel at. On our trip, we also climb Gokyo Ri, trek alongside the Ngozumpa glacier, which is the longest glacier in Nepal and tour the beautiful Gokyo Lakes which are the world’s highest freshwater lakes. We also reach the Everest base camp and Kalapathhar which are two of the most popular sites in the Everest region. Kalapathhar is considered as the best vantage point for up-close views of Everest and nearby Himalayas.

Namche Bazaar 3,438m / 11,280ft

After breakfast, we walk through beautiful pine forests and then along Dudh Koshi River ending our nature-filled journey at Namche Bazaar. After walking for almost over an hour, we come across the radiant Mt. Thamserku (6,608m) on our right.  The lush pine, fir and juniper forests that we encounter throughout our journey are ours to admire. If the weather is clear, we may even catch a glimpse of Mt. Everest peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. We continue walking until we reach Namche Bazaar which is the gateway to most treks and climbing expeditions in the Everest region. On that day we cross five suspension bridges, the last one also known as the Hillary Bridge being the highest. It is an uphill walk from Hillary Bridge to Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Namche Bazaar : Acclimatization
Namche Bazaar 3,438m / 11,280ft

Health experts recommend that we stay active and move around even during the rest day instead of being idle. There are a few options set aside for this day. We can either stroll around Namche Bazaar or hike up to the Everest View Hotel and enjoy an up-close view of the mighty Everest. While in the Namche village or upon returning from the hike to the Everest View Hotel, trekkers may also visit the local museum containing exhibits displaying the area’s native flora and fauna as well as the history of the Everest region.

For trekkers who want to hike for a little longer, a hike to Khumjung village (5-6 hours) may also be an option. While in the village we can visit the Edmund Hillary School and Khumjung Monastery (a monastery famous for housing the head of the Yeti!). Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Dingboche 4,360m / 14,305ft

If we want, we can visit the Tengboche Monastery again this morning and enjoy the serene views of the mountains and the monastery itself. We begin our trek on an easy trail through birch, conifers and rhododendron forests. This picturesque trail then dips down to Debuche, crossing the Imja River before climbing up to Pangboche. We choose the upper Pangboche trail as it provides a more pristine view of the Himalayas. We also visit the Pangboche monastery. From here, the walk is fairly moderate as we enter the Imja Valley. The valley gradually unfolds as we approach the confluence of the Lobuche River. We descend into the river and begin the climb up to Dingboche. Overnight in Dingboche.

We start the day with a gradual climb to Duglha at the end of the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. From here, we climb up a steep trail to Chupki Lhara, where we find an array of stones with prayer flags used as memorials to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer) and 10-time Everest submitter Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepali mountain guide) who perished on a mission to climb Everest.  Next, we continue to the Khumbu Glacier moraine and find ourselves facing several great peaks – Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. The trail then eases off as we follow the valley to Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche.

Lobuche to Gorak Shep, visit Everest Base Camp
Everest Base Camp 5,364m / 17,599ft

We take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorak Shep Lake. Continuing straight ahead, we come across the Indian army mountaineers’ memorials. The path from here can be misleading; hence, it is important that we follow our lead Sherpa diligently. The walk is strenuous due to thin air in the high altitude. We pass through rocky dunes, moraine and streams before reaching the Everest Base Camp. Upon reaching the Everest Base Camp, we see tents of mountaineers that stand out in bright colors against the monotony of gray surroundings (especially in the spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. We come back to Gorak Shep for a good night’s rest. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Day 10
Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar, then to Dzongla
Kala Patthar 5,545m / 18,193ft

We start our trek to Kala Patthar early in the morning in order to catch remarkable views of the first light of the sun shining on Mt. Everest. However, we need to be prepared for trekking in the dark and cold temperature (the temperature varies according to the season). Furthermore, there is always a chance for chilly winds which are quite common. As we continue our trek, familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Everest and Nuptse tower above us. After several hours of ascent, we will be on the top of Kala Patthar. The close-up view of Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks from Kalapathar is amazing. We enjoy the stunning Himalayan vista and descend to Dzongla where we stay the night.

Those participants who visit Everest Base Camp today will have an early breakfast to start early as Everest base camp hike takes longer than the hike to Kala Patthar.

Dzongla to Nirekha Base Camp via Cho La pass
Cho La pass 5,420m / 17,783ft

As we gain altitude , the Cho La Lake begins to appear. We also see Ama Dablam presiding over a range of mountains on the south and Cholatse soars on the west. Climbing the incline is not easy; it is steep and made worse by boulders over some of which we will have to scramble. The final climb to the Cho La can be a little tricky as the trail curves round a crevasse.  As with most Himalayan passes, the top of the Cho La is marked by prayer flags and cairns.  From here we turn right and walk on a slightly steep path for around two hours before reaching Nirekha Base Camp. From here we admire views of majestic peaks on all directions. Overnight at Nirekha Base Camp.

Summit Nirekha Peak and back to Base Camp
Nirekha Peak 6,159m / 20,208ft

After a full day’s rest, today we embark on our ultimate adventure which is summiting the Nirekha Peak. We get up at midnight for breakfast and begin trekking from 1:00 am. We begin our trek on a flat snow-covered trail before ascending on a steep path towards high camp. The peak is very technical and from high camp with a gradual ascent of about 20 degrees followed by a very steep ascent on a narrow ridge. Both main rope and fixed ropes will be used. We also come across a few crevasses before reaching the summit. From the summit, we get excellent views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, Cholatse, Pumori, Changri and others. After a safe and successful trip to the top, we safely make our way down to the Base camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nirekha Peak Climbing costs US $3,840 per person for the 20-day itinerary with Himalayan Glacier, which works out to roughly US $192 per day and includes hotels, domestic flights, an experienced climbing team, camping gear, and most meals throughout the trek and climb.

International flights, personal climbing gear, and the US $350 single room supplement in Kathmandu are billed separately, so confirm final costs with Himalayan Glacier before booking.

Nirekha Peak Climbing is graded Demanding to Challenging by Himalayan Glacier, involving a technical 6,159m (20,208ft) summit with steep snow and ice slopes, a narrow summit ridge, and sections that require both a main climbing rope and fixed ropes.

It is considered more technical than nearby trekking peaks like Mera, Island, and Lobuche East, so prior mountaineering experience with crampons, ice axe, and rope work is strongly recommended.

The best time for Nirekha Peak Climbing is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when skies are clearer, temperatures are more stable, and the technical sections of the climb are in the safest condition for summiting.

Spring also brings blooming rhododendrons along the lower trail, while autumn typically offers the crispest mountain visibility. Winter and monsoon months bring extreme cold, heavy snow, or poor visibility that increase climbing risk.

Nirekha Peak Climbing takes 20 days from arrival in Kathmandu to final departure, including two preparation days in the city, roughly 15 days of trekking and climbing through the Khumbu region, and a built-in reserve day for weather delays.

The itinerary also folds in visits to Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, and the Gokyo Lakes, extending the trip well beyond a standalone peak climb.

Nirekha Peak Climbing is not recommended for first-time climbers, since it is a technical NMA Grade A peak with steep ice sections, narrow ridgelines, and crevasse crossings that require prior mountaineering experience with ropes and crampons.

Trekkers with strong high-altitude trekking experience but no technical climbing background should consider a less technical peak such as Mera Peak or Island Peak first.

The maximum altitude on Nirekha Peak Climbing is 6,159m (20,208ft), reached at the summit on day 13, making this one of the higher trekking peaks in the Khumbu region and a serious high-altitude objective for climbers.

The trip also reaches other high points along the way, including Kala Patthar at 5,545m (18,193ft) and Everest Base Camp at 5,364m (17,599ft).

Nirekha Peak Climbing requires an NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association) climbing permit, a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry fee, all arranged in advance through Himalayan Glacier as the registered local operator.

NMA climbing permit fees vary seasonally, from around US $70 in winter and summer to US $250 in spring, and should be confirmed against current government rates before booking.

Solo climbing is not permitted on Nirekha Peak Climbing, since Nepal requires all foreign trekkers and climbers to hire a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency, and NMA peaks additionally require a qualified climbing Sherpa for the summit push.

Himalayan Glacier provides both a trekking guide for the approach and an experienced climbing Sherpa team for the technical summit day.

Nirekha Peak Climbing requires excellent cardiovascular fitness, prior high-altitude trekking experience, and basic technical climbing skills, since the itinerary includes a dedicated training day at base camp covering ice axe, crampon, harness, and rope techniques before the summit attempt.

Climbers should train for several months beforehand with cardio, strength, and loaded hiking, and ideally have completed a prior trekking peak or basic mountaineering course.

Crossing Cho La Pass at 5,420m (17,783ft) is the signature challenge before reaching Nirekha Base Camp, involving a steep, boulder-strewn ascent and a final approach that curves around a crevasse near the top of the pass.

The pass links the Everest Base Camp trail with the Gokyo valley and is typically crossed early in the morning when the snow underfoot is firmer.

Yes, Nirekha Peak Climbing includes both Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes, combining a technical peak summit with two of the Khumbu region’s most iconic trekking destinations in a single 20-day itinerary.

Highlights along the way include Kala Patthar for sunrise views of Everest, the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s longest, and Gokyo Ri overlooking the six Gokyo Lakes.

Acclimatization on Nirekha Peak Climbing happens through a rest day in Namche Bazaar at 3,438m (11,280ft) and a full rest and training day at Nirekha Base Camp before the summit push, following the standard climb-high, sleep-low approach.

The gradual multi-day ascent through Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche also builds in extra altitude adjustment before the Cho La Pass crossing. Read our full guide on 10 Tips to Help You Prepare for High Altitude Hiking.

Altitude sickness risk on Nirekha Peak Climbing is significant, since the route repeatedly climbs above 5,000m (16,404ft) and reaches a 6,159m (20,208ft) summit, so climbers should expect some symptoms and follow a slow, guided ascent with proper hydration.

Himalayan Glacier’s guides are trained to monitor for Acute Mountain Sickness and carry the equipment and emergency evacuation contacts needed throughout the trek and climb.

Accommodation on Nirekha Peak Climbing is in a 4-star hotel in Kathmandu, standard teahouses during the trekking sections, and private tents with foam mattresses during the climbing phase from Nirekha Base Camp to High Camp.

Teahouse and hotel rooms are twin-shared by default, with a private room available in Kathmandu for a US $350 single supplement.

Compared to Mera Peak, Island Peak, and Lobuche East, Nirekha Peak Climbing is more technical and far less crowded, since it was only recently opened to climbers and demands prior mountaineering experience rather than being a first climbing-peak choice.

Climbers seeking a first trekking peak typically start with Mera or Island Peak, while Nirekha suits those who already have rope and crampon experience and want a quieter summit.
