Fly to Pokhara; drive to Hile and trek to Ulleri
Ulleri 2,050m / 6,726ft

We take an early morning flight to Pokhara and enjoy amazing views of the Himalayas; opt to sit on the right side of the plane. On arrival in Pokhara, we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, the five peaks of Annapurna and several others. After a short rest, we drive to Hile, which is our trailhead. We pass through sub-tropical valley forests, sometimes on the carved trail on the side of the cliff. After lunch, we cross the Bhurungdi Khola via a bridge to the village of Tikhedhunga. The Ulleri Hill with thousands of steps and boulders that continually go upward will really prove a test of our stamina. We reach Ulleri by afternoon. Overnight in Ulleri.

Ulleri to Ghorepani
Ghorepani 2,850m / 9,351ft

After breakfast, we make our way ascending towards Ghorepani. The name Ghorepani in Nepali means ‘horse-water’ due to it being an important campsite for traders before it became a trekker’s stop. Ghorepani is an interesting place with small shops and stalls for selling local products and crafts. The town has two parts: one in a saddle and the other a few hundred feet lower. We stop at the higher part of the Ghorepani village that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Annapurna South and Nilgiri mountains. Since Ghorepani lies quite higher than our previous stop, we begin to feel the chilly weather especially in the evenings. Overnight in Ghorepani.

Today is a big day for us, so we make an early morning climb along the steep trail to Poon Hill viewpoint (3,210m/10,529ft.) to witness the most amazing sunrise views over the Himalayas. Poon Hill is the most popular trekking destination of the Annapurna region. It is also a great vantage point to enjoy the amazing views of Mustang, Pokhara and more than 20 of the highest mountains, including the close-up views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After spending some time taking pictures and having coffee, tea or hot chocolate, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast. Then we head east and climb a nearby ridge. We descend through rhododendron forests, pass by spectacular waterfalls along the way and reach Tadapani to spend the night. Overnight in Tadapani.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek typically costs between $2399 and $2899 USD per person for a standard 14-day package, depending on group size, season, accommodation standard, and whether you book with a licensed trekking agency. Prices generally include permits, teahouse lodging, meals on the trail, and guide and porter services.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is rated a moderate trek, involving 5 to 7 hours of daily walking on steep stone staircases, forest trails, and rocky paths, but requiring no technical climbing or mountaineering experience. Good general fitness and prior hiking experience make the trek considerably more enjoyable.

The best time for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is during pre-monsoon spring, from March to May, and post-monsoon autumn, from late September to December, when skies stay clear and mountain views are at their sharpest. Winter brings snow and cold at higher elevations, while the summer monsoon causes leeches, landslides, and poor visibility.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek takes 14 days from arrival in Kathmandu to final departure, including Kathmandu sightseeing, the Pokhara transfer, and roughly 8 to 9 days of trekking covering about 110 kilometers (68 miles) round trip.

A shorter 11-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary is available for trekkers with less time who still want to reach the same base camp.

Yes, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness, since it involves teahouse lodging, well-marked trails, and a lower maximum altitude than most other Himalayan base camp treks. First-timers should still train beforehand and walk at a steady pace to acclimatize comfortably.

The maximum altitude on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is 4,130m (13,550ft), reached at Annapurna Base Camp inside a natural amphitheater of peaks encircled by Annapurna I, Machapuchare, and Hiunchuli in central Nepal. This is notably lower than Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,598ft), which keeps overall altitude sickness risk comparatively low.

Trekkers on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek need a valid Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), checked at checkpoints such as Birethanti, Ghorepani, and Chhomrong, and mandatory for all foreign nationals regardless of trekking experience. Himalayan Glacier arranges the ACAP permit for every guest as part of the trip package, so there is no separate paperwork to manage.

Solo trekking without a licensed guide is not permitted on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, since Nepal’s government requires all foreign trekkers to hike with a registered guide or trekking agency, a rule enforced since 2023. A licensed guide also improves safety, navigation, and altitude sickness monitoring throughout the trek.

Preparing for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek requires moderate cardiovascular fitness, since trekkers walk 5 to 7 hours daily on steep stone stairways and forest trails for up to two weeks across changing elevations. Starting a cardio and stair-climbing routine 2 to 3 months before departure makes the trek considerably more comfortable.

The signature highlight of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is the sunrise at Poon Hill, followed by arrival at Annapurna Base Camp, a natural amphitheater ringed by Annapurna I, Machapuchare, and Hiunchuli at close range. Poon Hill offers panoramic sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges before the trail continues toward base camp.

Accommodation on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is in teahouses and lodges along the entire route, offering private twin rooms, hot meals, and warm blankets, so no camping gear or tents are needed for this trek. Rooms become more basic above Deurali, with shared bathrooms and solar-heated showers where available.

Food on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is served at teahouses along the route, offering dal bhat, noodles, soups, pasta, and other simple meals cooked fresh for trekkers each day of the journey. Dal bhat, Nepal’s staple rice and lentil meal, is widely recommended for its refillable portions and steady energy.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek differs from the shorter 11-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek and the longer Annapurna Circuit Trek by offering a relaxed 14-day pace, extra acclimatization days, and a Poon Hill sunrise, while reaching the same Annapurna Base Camp destination. The Annapurna Circuit is a longer, higher route over Thorong La Pass (5,416m/17,769ft), while the Sanctuary Trek stays below 4,150m/13,615ft.

Popular extensions to the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek include the Jhinu Danda natural hot springs, the Ghandruk village detour, and a scenic add-on stay by Pokhara’s lakeside before or after the trek. Jhinu Danda’s hot springs are a favorite stop for soaking tired muscles on the return journey.
