Best Time to Climb Island Peak in Nepal

So you have finally started wondering about the best time to climb Island Peak (Nepal)? This trip will take you high into the Himalayas and into the heartland of the Everest region with a chance to visit the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. You will have the opportunity to get up close not only with the snow-clad mountains and rugged terrain of the Khumbu region of Nepal, but also with the lifestyle and culture of the Sherpa people, whose name rings synonymous with the Himalayas itself. In order for you to maximize your opportunity and get the best out of this trip, it is only pertinent that you become familiar with the timing of your trip.

When to Climb?

Generally speaking, Island Peak can be attempted throughout the year except during the height of monsoon months (halfway through June to end of August). Even during the winter, people have successfully scaled the mountain, although cold weather could be detrimental for some, especially if you are a novice mountaineer. It’s not that the mountain is technically difficult to scale, but it rather depends on how comfortable you are with the extremes of winter months.

Although the peak can be scaled almost year round, the best and most suitable time to attempt Island Peak are during spring (March to early June) and autumn (September to November). The spring climbing season also happens to coincide with Everest climbing, so along the way you will likely encounter many expedition teams heading for the Everest during the months of April and May.

The weather tends to be clearer during autumn in Nepal, and it is by far the most popular time to scale the peak. This is also the best time to visit Nepal in general, and this period is when most tourists prefer trekking in the mountains. It is possible that this post-monsoon period can sometimes get a bit crowded, but on the flip side you can be pretty much sure that you will have the best weather and climbing conditions.

So there you have it! If the regular climbing seasons do not fit with your schedule and you want to experience something different from the usual, off season trip can also be a good idea. Or if you don’t want to take any chances with the weather you can just opt for the regular seasons. In any case, the adventure that is Island Peak climbing is there waiting for you.
