Make excursions to the beautiful landscapes on this Ladakh Extended Tour through high passes and the colorful monasteries

Ladakh is situated on the northernmost tip of India, sandwiched between the Karakoram and the Himalayas. It is one of the most popular areas for tourists and yet also among the few less explored regions in India. It’s believed that Buddhism penetrated to Tibet from India via Ladakh Himalayas. The influence of Buddhism can also be seen in the capital of Ladakh, Leh. During winter, the region sometimes becomes inaccessible due the thick layer of snow. Enjoy the brightly painted monasteries, wall tapestries, handmade crafts and the peculiar fragrance of Ladakh.

For our Extended Ladakh tour, we fly from Delhi to Leh. From Leh, we make excursions to various regions and landscapes of Ladakh including Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Alchi, Kargil, and Tsomoriri Lake. Finally, we conclude the tour with a return flight from Leh to Delhi.

Kargil: Kargil is a quiet town now, but previously Kargil once served as an important trade and transit centre in the Pan-Asian trade network. Numerous caravans carrying exotic merchandise comprising silk, brocade, carpets, felts, tea, poppy, ivory, etc. transited in the town on their way to and from China, Tibet, Yarkand and Kashmir. The old bazaar displayed a variety of Central Asian and Tibetan commodities even after the cessation of the Central Asian trade in 1949 till these were exhausted about two decades back. Similarly, the ancient trade route passing through the township was lined with several caravanserais. Now, travelers of numerous nationalities have replaced traders of the past, and Kargil has regained its importance as a center of travel-related activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ladakh Extended Tour costs US $6,240 per person on a twin-sharing basis, roughly US $446 per day across its 14-day itinerary. This is Himalayan Glacier’s most comprehensive Ladakh package, covering Nubra, Pangong, Kargil, Padum, and Tso Moriri.

A single supplement of US $665 applies for travelers who want a private room instead of sharing.

The Ladakh Extended Tour is graded Moderate, combining long high-altitude drives with several nights of camping and a demanding multi-day loop through remote Zanskar. It suits travelers comfortable with extended time at altitude and long driving days.

Some driving days run 7 to 8 hours over rough roads, particularly the Kargil-to-Padum sector through Zanskar.

May through September is the best time for the Ladakh Extended Tour, when the high passes to Nubra, Pangong, and the remote Zanskar valley near Padum are all accessible. Road conditions to Padum are particularly weather-dependent.

Traveling in peak summer (July-August) offers the most reliable access to every stop on this extended route. Read our full guide on Best Time to Visit Ladakh.

The Ladakh Extended Tour runs 14 days, the longest of Himalayan Glacier’s Ladakh itineraries, covering Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Alchi, Kargil, Padum in Zanskar, and Tso Moriri before returning to Leh and Delhi.

The extra days compared to shorter Ladakh tours are spent reaching and exploring the remote Zanskar region around Padum.

The Ladakh Extended Tour is better suited to travelers with some prior high-altitude or long-haul travel experience rather than complete beginners, given its 14-day length, multiple camping nights, and remote Zanskar driving sector.

First-time Ladakh visitors with limited time may prefer the shorter Classic Ladakh Tour or the Nubra-Pangong itinerary.

The highest point is Khardung La Pass at 5,578m (18,301ft) on Day 2, with Tso Moriri Lake at 4,522m (14,837ft) and Tanglang La Pass at 5,359m (17,585ft) also featuring prominently on this extended route.

Multiple overnight stops above 4,000m mean altitude awareness is important throughout, not just on the Khardung La crossing.

Yes, inner-line permits are required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and other restricted border zones covered on this route, and Himalayan Glacier arranges all necessary permits on the traveler’s behalf ahead of arrival.

Zanskar and Kargil do not currently require the same inner-line permit as Nubra and Pangong, but this should be reconfirmed given evolving regulations.

The Zanskar section takes travelers from Kargil to Padum over two long driving days, passing Nun Kun Peak, Rangdum Monastery, and the Dran Drung Glacier before exploring Karsha, Stongdey, and Sani monasteries around Padum.

This remote valley sees far fewer tourists than Leh or Nubra, offering a genuinely off-the-beaten-path experience.

The tour uses 4-star hotels in Leh, Alchi, Kargil, and Padum, with deluxe full-board camping at Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri. Rooms are shared on a twin basis, with a private room available for a supplement.

Hotel standards in remote towns like Padum and Kargil are more basic than in Leh, reflecting local infrastructure.

Daily breakfast is included at all hotel stays, with full board provided during the two camping nights at Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri. Lunches and dinners elsewhere are at the traveler’s own cost.

A variety of Indian, Tibetan, and continental meal options are typically available at hotels along the route.

A full acclimatization day in Leh at the start of the trip, along with gradual altitude gain toward Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri, helps reduce altitude sickness risk on the Ladakh Extended Tour. Staying hydrated and pacing the first days are also advised.

Guides watch closely for symptoms at the trip’s higher overnight stops, particularly Pangong and Tso Moriri.

The 14-day Extended Tour adds Alchi, Kargil, and the remote Zanskar valley around Padum on top of the Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake highlights shared with Himalayan Glacier’s shorter Ladakh tours, making it the deepest regional itinerary on offer.

Travelers with less time can still see the core highlights on the 8-days Ladakh Tour or 12-days Classic Ladakh Tour.

Yes, the Ladakh Extended Tour departs on schedule once booked, even with a small group, so travelers can plan confidently around the published dates.

Custom start dates can also be arranged for private groups outside the standard calendar.

Warm layered clothing is essential for the Ladakh Extended Tour, since nights at Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri can drop close to freezing even in summer, alongside sun protection, sturdy footwear for uneven terrain, and any personal altitude medication.

A detailed packing checklist is available for travelers preparing for the trip’s camping nights and high passes.
