Many adventurers struggle to choose between these treks, but this combined experience provides the ideal solution. This comprehensive trek involves 7 days of hiking, making it more challenging than the Classic Inca Trail Trek and suitable for experienced hikers in the Peruvian Andes.

This epic journey allows you to visit the Humantay Lake sitting like a jewel among the white mountain peaks. You get to see the imposing Salkantay Mountain before joining the ancient Inca trail leading to Machu Picchu. Trip Itinerary

Day 01
Arrive at Cusco International Airport, Peru

On arrival at Cusco International Airport in Peru, we will be greeted by a representative of Himalayan Glacier who will drop us off at our designated hotel in Cusco. Since Cusco is located at a high altitude, we recommend that you take plenty of rest and rehydrate in your hotel room to take upon the challenges in the upcoming days. In the afternoon at 5:0 pm, we will briefly discuss our trip itinerary with our trip leader. We would probably want to go to bed early after dinner today. Overnight in Cusco.

Sacred Valley Tour; Pisac and Ollantaytambo Ruins

Today, following an early breakfast at our hotel, we will commence our exploration of the Sacred Valley with visits to Pisac (2,972m/9,750ft.) and Ollantaytambo (2,792m/9,160ft.). Pisac, situated along the Vilcanota River, is renowned for its Incan ruins and bustling market, which attracts many tourists. While at Pisac, we’ll tour the Archaeological Park, which includes the largest Incan burial site, a temple complex featuring a sun temple, ceremonial altars, and intricate water channels. After concluding our visit here, we’ll have some free time to wander through the Pisac local market.

Ollantaytambo showcases magnificent architecture with remarkable stonework and advanced agricultural techniques. The key attractions in this town include the Temple of the Sun, perched atop a pyramid of seventeen terraces, and the Terraces, a distinctive feature of the Sacred Valley. Following a full day of exploration, we will return to our hotel in Cusco. This day tour will help our bodies acclimatize to the lower oxygen levels while offering an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture of the Sacred Valley. We will spend the night in Cusco.

As each day passes, we are getting closer to connecting with the original Inca Trail that leads to Machu Picchu, and today marks the last day of our journey to reach this historic area. Here, you may have the chance to witness the majestic flight of the Andean Condor. Today’s challenge will be dealing with the high altitude as we climb up to the Incachiriaska High Pass, which stands at 5,338m/17,513 ft. After about 3 hours of ascent, we’ll start a gentler descent into the valley below. Once we reach our camp, we’ll enjoy dinner and some rest. Frequently Asked Questions

Machu Picchu is situated in the Cusco region of southern Peru, high in the Andes Mountains. It is located above the Sacred Valley, near the town of Aguas Calientes, and is surrounded by lush cloud forests and dramatic peaks. Often referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” Machu Picchu actually spans two mountains: Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu. These mountains are part of a chain of high peaks within the southern Central Andes. In short, the Machu Picchu site is in a remote part of the upper rainforest, at nearly 8,000 feet, with the Urubamba River flowing nearby. The ancient citadel is accessible by train, bus, or on foot via famous routes like the Inca Trail or the scenic Salkantay Trek. Its remote mountain location is part of what makes it one of the most unforgettable hiking trails in Peru.
The best time to visit Peru is May to September, the dry season, when clear skies and stable weather create ideal conditions for sightseeing and trekking across the Andes. These months are perfect for popular adventures like the Inca Trail and other iconic Hiking trails in Peru. Travelers who want fewer crowds and mild temperatures can also visit during the shoulder months of April and October, which still offer good weather while keeping experiences more peaceful. You can check out our detailed guide on the best time to visit Peru to make your experience enjoyable and hassle-free.
The Inca Trail is one of the most iconic hiking trails in Peru, famous for its blend of stunning Andean landscapes, cloud forests, ancient stone pathways, and centuries-old Inca ruins. The Inca Trail hike begins in Cusco and ends at Machu Picchu. This historic route once connected different parts of the vast Inca Empire and now leads modern trekkers directly to the Sun Gate overlooking Machu Picchu. Today, the trail is one of the most popular alternatives to the Salkantay Trek, offering a more culturally immersive experience with archaeological sites along the way. Its rich history and dramatic scenery make it a bucket-list journey for anyone seeking an unforgettable trekking experience in Peru.

Peru is filled with so many things that perhaps a single visit to this fairy-tale country would not be sufficient. Right from its gastronomy and the cultural heritages to its biodiversity, mountains, jungles, and seas, Peru is suitable for almost everyone in the world. Check out our article on the best places to visit in Peru and plan your perfect adventure with us.
The distance from Lima to Machu Picchu is 503km (312mi) in a straight line, but when traveling, the total route covers 1280km (795mi). There is no option of reaching Machu Picchu from Lima directly. First, you have to get to Cusco from Lima. You can reach Cusco either by a domestic flight, car, bus, or train. Apparently, taking a flight to Cusco from Lima is the fastest way, which takes just over an hour and a half, to reach the destination.
To hike the Inca Trail, you must book a permit through an authorized local tour operator—individuals cannot reserve permits on their own. These permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially for the peak season from May to September. You must book at least 3 to 6 months before, as permits sell out quickly.
