Trip Itinerary

Day 01
Arrival in Lhasa

We arrive in Lhasa, the ancient capital of Tibet and former residence of the Dalai Lama. We can reach here either by a trans-Himalayan flight from Kathmandu or by air or train from mainland China. The flight from Nepal offers stunning views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other Himalayas. The overland journey from China reveals the vast terrain of the Tibetan Plateau. Upon arrival, our Himalayan Glacier representative will receive us and escort us to the hotel—about an hour’s drive into the city. The rest of the day is free for acclimatization and rest.

Parikrama to Dherapuk and Charan Sparsh

Our spiritual yatra around Mount Kailash begins today. After breakfast, we drive to Yam Dwar, the “Gateway of the God of Death,” where our trek officially starts. As we walk alongside Tibetan and Indian pilgrims, we move beneath towering rock cliffs and follow the Lha Chu River. Soon, the North Face of Mount Kailash comes into view — its pyramid-like summit revered by Buddhists as the home of Buddha Demchok and by Hindus as the sacred residence of Lord Shiva.

By late afternoon, we reach Dherapuk Monastery (4,900m / 16,076ft). From here, we take a short 45-minute walk to Charan Sparsh, which means “Touch of the Feet” in Sanskrit. This holy site, located at the base of Mount Kailash’s north face, is revered by pilgrims as a deeply spiritual place for offering prayers, meditation, and seeking blessings.

We spend the night at Dherapuk, surrounded by the divine energy and serene beauty of the Himalayas.

Day 10
Parikrama to Dolma-La Pass - The Most Challenging and Sacred Day

Today marks the most challenging and spiritually significant day of the Kailash Kora (Parikrama). We begin our trek early in the morning for the steep ascent to Dolma-La Pass (5,636m) — the highest point of the entire Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. It is believed that crossing this sacred pass symbolizes the death of one’s ego and the beginning of spiritual rebirth.

Just below the pass lies Gauri Kund, also known as the Lake of Compassion, revered in Hindu tradition as the site where Goddess Parvati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, is said to have bathed.

After crossing Dolma-La, we descend carefully into the Zutulphuk Valley, surrounded by breathtaking, tranquil landscapes. The downhill trail requires patience and balance, and by evening, we arrive at Zutulphuk Monastery (4,835m / 15,860ft). This sacred site is associated with the tantric yogi Milarepa, who is believed to have meditated here in a cave.

We spend the night at a guesthouse, reflecting on the day’s profound experiences. This day is not only a test of physical endurance but also a deeply spiritual journey, bringing us closer to the divine presence of Mount Kailash.

While no prior mountaineering or technical trekking skills are needed, a moderate level of fitness, mental resilience, and a positive attitude are essential for completing this sacred pilgrimage.

Who Can Join the Yatra?

  • First-Time Trekkers:
The Yatra is suitable for those with no previous trekking experience, as long as they are physically fit and willing to prepare adequately.
  • Experienced Trekkers:
Individuals with prior experience in high-altitude trekking will find the journey easier to manage due to familiarity with altitude and rugged terrain.

Fitness Requirements

  • Physical Fitness:
Participants should be able to walk 6–8 hours daily over varied terrains, including uphill and downhill trails. Exercises such as walking, jogging, cycling, or stair climbing for at least 1–2 months prior to the trip are recommended.
  • High-Altitude Preparation:
    • Trekking at altitudes exceeding 5,000m (16,404ft) can be physically demanding.
    • Acclimatization is key, and our itinerary is carefully designed to include rest days to reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Medical Considerations

  • Doctor’s Consultation:
Participants with pre-existing medical conditions (e.g., heart, lung, or blood pressure issues) should consult a doctor before joining the Yatra. Medical clearance is highly recommended.
  • Travel Insurance:
Comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly advised.

Mental Readiness

  • Positive Mindset:
A spiritual journey like the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra requires mental endurance and the ability to adapt to challenging conditions.
  • Group Dynamics:
Sharing the experience with fellow pilgrims can be uplifting and supportive during physically tough moments.

Preparation Tips

Engage in cardio exercises like running, swimming, or brisk walking to improve stamina.
  2. High-Altitude Conditioning:
Practice trekking or hiking in similar high-altitude environments if possible.
  3. Packing Essentials:
Use appropriate trekking gear, including comfortable hiking boots, layered clothing, and accessories to withstand cold and windy conditions.

  • Comprehensive Support: From oxygen cylinders to private kitchen facilities, Himalayan Glacier ensures every aspect of the Yatra is managed efficiently.

Acclimatization on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Acclimatization is a crucial aspect of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra to ensure your body adapts to the high-altitude environment. The Yatra involves trekking and travelling at elevations above 5,000m (16,404ft), where the oxygen levels are significantly lower. To make this spiritually fulfilling journey safe and enjoyable, Himalayan Glacier incorporates carefully planned acclimatization stops and provides support throughout the trip.

Why Acclimatization is Important

  • High Altitude Effects:
As you ascend to altitudes exceeding 4,500m (14,764ft), your body needs time to adjust to reduced oxygen levels. Proper acclimatization reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), which can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue.
  • Smooth Journey:
Taking time to acclimatize enhances your stamina, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable trek around Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

Himalayan Glacier’s Support for Acclimatization

  • Acclimatization-Focused Itinerary:
The Yatra schedule is meticulously planned with sufficient rest days to allow gradual adaptation.
  • Oxygen Support:
Oxygen cylinders are available in every coach, and emergency oxygen is provided during high-altitude sections like the Dolma-La Pass.
  • Experienced Guides:
Our expert Nepali and Tibetan guides monitor your health, provide advice, and ensure your safety throughout the journey.
  • Hydration and Nutrition:
We emphasize proper hydration and provide high-protein vegetarian meals to maintain your energy and strength at high altitudes.

Tips for Effective Acclimatization

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body functioning optimally at high altitudes.
  2. Pace Yourself: Walk slowly, especially on ascents, to allow your body to adapt.
  3. Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: These can exacerbate the effects of altitude sickness.
  4. Listen to Your Body: Inform your guide immediately if you experience symptoms of AMS.
  5. Take Medication: If recommended by your doctor, bring altitude sickness medications like Diamox.

Why Acclimatization Ensures a Successful Yatra

Proper acclimatization enhances your physical ability to handle high-altitude conditions and ensures the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra remains a deeply spiritual and safe journey. By following Himalayan Glacier’s thoughtfully designed itinerary, you’ll experience the majestic beauty of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar without compromising your health and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mt. Kailash is located in far west corner of Tibet and is the most sacred peak in Asia. Known by the Tibetans as Kangrinboqué, Mt. Kailash is a high peak in the Kailash Range and lies at an altitude of 6,638m (21,778ft.). The Kailash Range forms part of the trans-Himalaya in the Ngari prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region in China.  Mt. Kailash is located near Lake Mansarovar and Lake Rakshastal, close to the source of some of the longest Asian rivers such as Brahmaputra, Indus, Sutlej, and Ghaghara (also known as Karnali). Of the two beautiful lakes, Mansarovar at an altitude of 4,590m (15,059ft.) is considered to be the highest freshwater body in the world.
Due to its high religious significance, Mt. Kailash has always remained and unclimbed mountain till now. The mountain is sacred to the Hindus, Buddhists, Bons and Jains. According to the Hindu mythology, the mountain has been regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva. Many attempts have been made in the past to get to the summit, but none succeeded due to extreme weather conditions the moment they set foot on the mountain. Although the Chinese government, during the mid-80s, offered Reinhold Messner, the Italian alpinist authorization to climb Mt. Kailash, he simply declined the offer after protest from mountaineers around the world. The Chinese government then got the message and banned any future climbing attempts. There isn’t much information, but it is believed that the only person to reach the summit was the Tibetan Buddhist yogi, Milarepa in the 11th century.
The direct answer to this question is: Yes! It is a very arduous and a challenging trip especially due to the altitude and thin air that is dry and contains 40% less oxygen that that at sea level. In such conditions, there is a high risk of catching altitude sickness. During the Yatra, pilgrims have to pass through high-altitude areas under hostile conditions. The extreme steep slopes and the long distances to be covered every day from one camp to another make the Kailash tour rather difficult. If you have a previous hiking experience in high altitude and do regular exercises and in a very good health, then it wouldn’t be a problem.
There are 3 major routes from Nepal to do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The first route is via Simikot entering the Tibetan border at Hilsa either on a helicopter or trekking from Simikot till Hilsa and then an overland trip to Mansarovar. Another route is flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa and then continuing on a road drive either from Lhasa itself or Ngari. Then there is a land route beginning from Kathmandu and driving all the way through the Kyirong border to Darchen at the foot of Mt. Kailash. This route is quite adventurous and comparatively more economic than the other routes. For most visitors traveling to Kailash Mansarovar, the best way is to travel overland to Kailash from Lhasa after a short flight from Kathmandu to the Tibetan capital. This route will help reduce the risk of altitude sickness as you gradually begin driving from Lhasa over a few days. But, for some adventurer seekers, the land route through Kyirong border may be the best way to reach their destination.
Kailash Mansarovar can be visited any time during the months from mid-April to September end each year. However, the best time to arrange your travel to Mt. Kailash is undoubtedly April to June and September that offers high visibility of the mountain along with the stunning beautiful views and the wonderful temperatures. July and August are the monsoon months that bring intermittent light rains and fogs. November through March is the cold season that experiences ice and heavy snow falls making it nearly hard to cross certain sections of the trail.
Firstly, Mt. Kailash turns heavenly on a full moon night. It is believed that a holy dip in the Lake Mansarovar on a full moon night washes away all the sins of present and the past 100 lives and this very holy dip turns a person into a new human soul with the same body. According to the ancient Vedic astrology, the full moon radiates the most positive and vibrant cosmic energies. So, people try to reach Kailash on full moon to be a part of the sheer spiritual energy emanated in the natural surroundings of Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.
