The misery of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25 was shared the most by Rasuwa followed by other parts of Nepal. Consequently, Rasuwa was declared a red-alert zone by the Nepal government instantly. The disaster claimed over 8,000 lives and affected 8 million people. Langtang Valley alone lost 400 lives, flooded away by an earthquake-triggered avalanche, destroying an entire village and infrastructures. The district is still suffering and needs support from all sides, especially to re-maintain its position as one of the most famous trekking destinations in Nepal.

One of the most affected aspects in the Langtang Valley is education. During our field assessment, we found all but one school currently in operation in the area. The locals are not yet ready to reconstruct schools and send their children in upper parts of the valley due to fear. Mixing an unforgettable trekking experience with good deeds, we have come up with an amazing itinerary that will not only provide trekkers with pure Himalayan adventure, but also an opportunity to be a part of change.

Here’s what we are trying to do:

  • Fundraise for Shree Nepal Rastriya Primary School in Khangjim. We commit 100 US $ for every trek we sell to the school committee, to help them for school development and infrastructure reconstruction.
  • Provide our client’s with a new perspective to experience Langtang National Park – one of the most famous trekking routes in Nepal.
  • Provide our clients with the opportunity to take part in volunteering activities to make travel more exciting.
  • An opportunity for students and teachers in remote region to indulge in cross-cultural environment of learning.
  • Allow Langtang to welcome as much visitors as it used to before earthquake.

BACKGROUND OF THE SCHOOL

Shree Nepal Rastriya Primary School is located in the lower part of Khangjim-VDC. This is the only existing school from lower to upper Langtang route, as all the other schools were completely destroyed by the April 2015 earthquake. The school runs classes for 1st to 5th grade students, who are a total of 46 students. They have only one building (one storey) with 4 rooms including the office. The building has cracks as a result of the earthquake. The school is in need of serious public attention and ideas of renovation. It is currently equipped with only 5 teachers.

ACTIVITIES

1. Volunteering

If you are someone who believes helping others is the best way to travel, this trip is for you. We donate 100 US $ from every trip we sell to the school management committee. We also offer volunteers opportunities to extend their support in the field. You can get involved in the following activities in the school for 2 days:

  • Teaching English (alphabets and words in lower grades and basic conversation in upper grades), Mathematics, Science and other subjects
  • Taking part in extra-curricular activities (sports, team-building and debates)
  • Hand-washing and nutrition classes
  • Arts and Crafts classes. (Origami, basic art classes). You may have to bring color pencils and/or coloring books etc as the school will most likely lack those items)

2. Trekking

We will leave for Langtang Valley Trek after spending some days in the school. Be with us as we ascend the pine forests, rocky dunes, Yak meadows and the mighty Kyanjin-Ri (Langtang View). The Sherpa culture starts to make more sense as we climb, with occasional encounters with donkeys, horses, Yaks, wild boars, pheasants and the vegetation inside one of the most popular National Park area of the country. The Valley has wide range of vegetation, wildlife, glaciers, local culture and fresh air for us as we walk by.

WHY TRAVEL WITH US?

Trek from Syarbu Besi to Khangjim Volunteering in Khangjim

We begin our trek after breakfast. We cross a suspension bridge and climb uphill to Khangjim, a small Tamang village. Most of the trekking route from here is a single walk dirt track. We reach Khangjim in around 2 hours. After lunch and some rest, we visit the school where we will be spending the next two days. During these two days, we will be living in the same tea-house in Khangjim. We will be spending most of our time with the students from around the village. At the end of our last day, we will bid them farewell and prepare for the trek ahead.  Spend two nights in Khangjim.

Day 06
Trek from Khangjim to Sherpa Village (3 hrs) to Upper Rimche(5 hrs)

After breakfast, we will start our trek from Khangjim to Sherpa Village. First part of the morning will be colder as the hills obstruct the sun, but not for long. We will meet some Sherpa people who inhabit the village which has around 20 households, all equipped with tea houses for trekkers. Acclimatization will be done in abundance today. We will stop in Sherpa Village for lunch. After that, we will proceed towards, upper Rimche. Occasional encounter with load-carriers (donkeys) reflects the hardship of material supplies in the geography – Overnight in Rimche.

Day 07
Upper Rimche to Kyanjin Gompa Village

After an early breakfast we begin our long journey to Kyanjin Gompa Village. There are tea-house clusters between Rimche and Mundu, but most of them are closed, another result of the earthquake. Therefore, we carry packed lunch and have it on the way. The trek feels different the moment we change our direction from east to north, and head towards the Langtang Mountain. Forest will slowly start to clear up as we ascend. We cross a beautiful meadow, a grassland and rocky dunes as we continue our journey. As we continue ascending, the number of Yaks starts increasing and long prayer walls (Tibetan inscription) begin to appear. On our journey, we also see the ruins of Langtang Village where an avalanche had claimed 400 lives and displaced the whole settlement last year. We continue walking and pass through camp highlights-Lama Hotel, Ghoda Tabela, Riverside-Inn, and Langtang Village (ruins). After reaching Mundu, we trek further for about 2 hours to Kyanjin Gompa, upper Langtang civilization. Nearby mountains in the south look grand with the moon shining on a clear night – Overnight in Kyanjin Gompa area.

Day 08
Climb Kyanjin-Ri for sunrise view, visit Kyanjin Gompa and back to Mundu

We get up early in the morning and climb Kyanjin-Ri to enjoy the sun as it rises from the mighty Langtang Mountain. After climbing the steep hill for about 1.5 hours we eventually reach the top of the ridge. On the way, we can observe Yaks, pheasants, hawks and other animals and birds welcoming the morning. Temperature drops down to zero easily, so we also dress warm and carry a lot of drinking water. At the top, the view is magnificent with the mighty Langtang Peak right in front of us. As the sun tears off the dark, the peak turns red in excitement. We descend after spending some time enjoying the amazing view. We have breakfast in the same teahouse we stayed for the night in Kyanjin Gompa. After resting for a while, we visit the Kyanjin Gompa monastery, which is a principal monastery of this region. Then we trek back to Mundu – Overnight in Mundu.

Trek back to Syabru Besi

From upper Rimche, we trek back to Syarbu Besi. Since we will be descending for the most part, we should walk carefully and not put too much pressure on our knees.
