In general, Lemosho route itineraries to reach Africa’s roof include an 8-day trip, a 9-day trip, and a 10-day trip with slight variations. And the Lemosho route is filled with picturesque landscape, pristine wilderness, and a unique and remote Tanzania’s lifestyle. Day 02
High-Altitude Drop Off Destination & Trekking to Shira 2 Camp
Shira 2 Camp 3,900m / 12,796ft

In the morning, your guide will arrive at the hotel along with a support crew who will meet you and have another short briefing. After breakfast at your hotel, you will drive off to Londorossi Gate (2200m), the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. After acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, you will continue towards the drop off points by off-road vehicles. The drop off point (Lemosho Glades) at an altitude of 3500 meters is the point where you will be able to see the magnificent views of the Shira Plateau for the first time. From the drop off point, you will begin trekking with a moderate gain in altitude towards the high-altitude camp Shira 2. The walk is not too physically challenging but you will be able to begin getting acclimatized. By the time you reach the camp, your crew will already have the tents set up and they will cook dinner for you.
Since it is your first day at this altitude, we strongly advise you to pay attention to the following instruction:

  • Stay away from drinking caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
  • Drink as much boiled water as possible, at frequent intervals. It is best for your body if you drink at least 4 liters each day on your trek.
  • To lessen symptoms of altitude sickness, take a Diamox pill. If you are allergic to certain medicines, it is recommended that you consult your doctor prior to your trip.
  • If you experience any discomfort associated with your breathing and start feeling sick or get a headache, tell your guide about your condition immediately.

Trekking Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower; descend to Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp 3,960m / 12,993ft

You will start trekking from Shira 2 Camp after breakfast and head towards the key point of the route, the Lava Tower (4630m). Since this section of the trail comprises lots of ups and downs, it might not be easy and you may feel some discomfort. In order to get acclimatized to the altitude, it is necessary to spend a couple of hours here, so we will stop here for lunch. After lunch, it is time for descending down to Barranco Camp (3960m). At the camp, you will see the famous Barranco Wall which is notable for its colossal size and steep gradient.
Note: If you fall sick due to high elevation, you may avoid passing through the Lava Tower and instead follow the route used by the porters that lie at a lower elevation.

Day 04
Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp 4,035m / 13,239ft

Today, you will climb the Barranco Wall. Hiking up the wall is not so hard and takes around one hour to the summit. In order to avoid crowds of other groups, it is advised to make an early start from the camp after breakfast. On reaching the top of the wall, you will rest for a while and take photographs in front of the Kibo volcano. It is then time to take up a more difficult hike towards the Karanga Camp. After walking with an optimal pace on the frequent ascents and descents on the route, you will reach the camp and have your lunch. A couple of hours after lunch, you will hike further higher to get acclimatized and then walk back down to the camp.

Note: It is advised to take the acclimatization hikes seriously as they help you avoid getting altitude sickness and ultimately increase the chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro. It is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude that we recommend trekkers to do so as to speed up the acclimatization process.

Uhuru Peak 5,895m / 19,341ft

You will wake up just before midnight. After having some tea and biscuits, you will begin the climb to the top of the Uhuru Peak. Relatively, it is an easy climb with only the high altitude as a challenging factor. Your trekking guide will monitor your physical and mental conditions throughout the entire journey. In about 6 hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m) located on the crater rim and make a brief stop with magnificent sunrise views. From this point onwards, you may encounter snow all the way in the 1-hour ascent to the last point of the climb – Uhuru Peak, the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. After spending some time drinking tea and taking photographs on the summit, you may descend to the nearest glacier is you wish. Then you will return back to Barafu Camp which will take around 3 hours. Here at the camp, you will rest and enjoy your hot lunch in the sun and after resting for a while, you will descend further to the Millennium Camp (3820m) to spend the night.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Kilimanjaro Climb and Luxury Safari in Tanzania costs US $8,556 per person on a twin-sharing basis, about US $713 per day across the 12-day trip. The higher cost reflects the added 4-day luxury safari through Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater after the climb.

A single supplement of US $499 applies to the climbing portion for a private tent; safari lodging costs are typically shared costs built into the package price.

This trip is graded Demanding for its Lemosho Route climbing section, which involves the same high-altitude challenge as a standalone Kilimanjaro climb, while the following 4-day safari is a relaxed, vehicle-based experience with no physical difficulty.

Climbers should prepare specifically for the summit push to Uhuru Peak; the safari portion requires no particular fitness.

The dry seasons of January to mid-March and June to October suit both halves of this trip well, offering clear Kilimanjaro summit conditions and excellent wildlife visibility in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater during the same window.

July through September aligns the climb with strong dry-season game viewing, though it is also peak season for both activities. Read our full guide on Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro.

This combination trip runs 12 days total: 7 days for the Lemosho Route climb (including arrival and Mweka Gate descent) followed by a 4-day luxury safari through Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater, plus a final departure day.

The itinerary can be adjusted to add extra safari days or a Zanzibar beach extension on request.

The safari portion suits any traveler, but the Kilimanjaro climb requires the same fitness and altitude preparedness as a standalone Demanding-grade climb, so beginners should be reasonably fit hikers even though no technical climbing skill is needed.

Travelers uncertain about the climb but wanting the safari experience can also book a Tanzania safari on its own.

The maximum altitude is Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (19,341ft), Kilimanjaro’s summit, reached on Day 6 of the itinerary. The subsequent safari portion stays at much lower elevations, generally between 1,000m and 2,300m across the national parks visited.

This is the same summit elevation shared by every Kilimanjaro route, since all paths converge at Uhuru Peak.

Yes, a Kilimanjaro National Park climbing permit is required for the mountain portion, and separate park entry fees apply for Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater, all of which are arranged and included by Himalayan Glacier.

No visa-style application is needed from the traveler beyond standard Tanzania entry requirements.

The safari covers Tarangire National Park, known for its elephant herds and baobab trees, the Serengeti’s vast plains, and the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the few places in Tanzania to reliably see rhino alongside the rest of the Big Five.

Game drives are conducted in private 4×4 vehicles with an experienced safari guide throughout.

Travelers stay in comfortable camps and lodges within or near Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater during the safari portion, a distinctly more relaxed style of accommodation compared to the mountain tents used during the Kilimanjaro climb.

Full board is provided throughout both the climbing and safari portions of this trip, with European and Indian-style meals on the mountain and a European and Indian buffet style during the safari, plus a welcome and farewell dinner in Moshi.

Dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice to Himalayan Glacier.

Yes, this itinerary can be customized to shorten or extend the safari portion, or to add a Zanzibar beach extension after the Ngorongoro Crater leg, since Himalayan Glacier tailors safari length to each traveler’s preference.

Travelers wanting only the standard Kilimanjaro climb without a safari can also book the standalone Lemosho Route trip instead.

This 12-day trip follows the same 7-day Lemosho Route climb as Himalayan Glacier’s standalone Kilimanjaro trip, then adds a 4-day luxury safari, making it a better fit for travelers who want to pair the summit achievement with Tanzania’s wildlife parks in one visit.

Travelers short on time or budget may prefer the standalone climb and add a safari on a future trip.

Yes, all climbers register with Kilimanjaro National Park’s search-and-rescue service as part of the permit process, and guides are trained to monitor for altitude sickness and coordinate evacuation if a climber needs to descend during the summit push.

Rescue registration is included in the trip cost and processed automatically at the park gate.

The clear highlight is standing atop Uhuru Peak at sunrise after the overnight summit push, followed days later by spotting the Big Five during a game drive into the Ngorongoro Crater, combining Africa’s highest point with its most concentrated wildlife viewing.

The Serengeti’s open plains and Tarangire’s elephant herds round out the safari’s signature wildlife experiences.
