Kilimanjaro Climbing via Lemosho Route  - 8 Days

Kilimanjaro Climbing via Lemosho Route offers fascinating scenic vistas and considered the most beautiful trail on Kilimanjaro. The Kilimanjaro Lemosho route is filled with pristine wildlife and panoramic views on various sides of the mountain. Lemosho is one of the newer routes with excellent acclimatization opportunities. It is our preferred route owing to the lowest traffic of climbers, beautiful scenery and high summit success rate. Various Kilimanjaro Lemosho route itineraries to reach the roof of Africa include an 8-day trip, a 9-day trip, and a 10-day trip with slight variations. On this 8-day trip, you will require a good physical condition as you will scale the Uhuru peak and return in 6-day time.

Kilimanjaro Climbing via Lemosho Route Highlights

  • Climb the highest peak in Africa which is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world
  • Climb through the most preferred route which has a beautiful trail and considered as the most scenic route in Kilimanjaro
  • Venture into the rainforest to make way to Shira Ridge
  • Trekkers will encounter low traffic until joining the Machame route

High Moshi 950m / 3,117ft

On arrival at the international airport in Kilimanjaro, you will be met by a Himalayan Glacier representative who will escort you to your designated hotel in Moshi. Later, in the evening, there will be a pre-trip discussion with our manager. You may ask as many questions to your trip guide and get a clear vision about your upcoming trip. High-Altitude Drop Off Destination &Trekking to Shira 2 Camp
Shira 2 Camp 3,900m / 12,796ft

In the morning, your guide will arrive at the hotel along with a support crew who will meet you and have another short briefing. After breakfast at your hotel, you will drive off to Londorossi Gate (2200m), the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. After acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, you will continue towards the drop off points by off-road vehicles. The drop off point (Lemosho Glades) at an altitude of 3500 meters is the point where you will be able to see the magnificent views of the Shira Plateau for the first time. From the drop off point, you will begin trekking with a moderate gain in altitude towards the high-altitude camp Shira 2. The walk is not too physically challenging but you will be able to begin getting acclimatized. By the time you reach the camp, your crew will already have the tents set up and they will cook dinner for you.
Since it is your first day at this altitude, we strongly advise you to pay attention to the following instruction:

  • Stay away from drinking caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
  • Drink as much boiled water as possible, at frequent intervals. It is best for your body if you drink at least 4 liters each day on your trek.
  • To lessen symptoms of altitude sickness, take a Diamox pill. If you are allergic to certain medicines, it is recommended that you consult your doctor prior to your trip.
  • If you experience any discomfort associated with your breathing and start feeling sick or get a headache, tell your guide about your condition immediately.

Trekking Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower; descend to Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp 3,960m / 12,993ft

You will start trekking from Shira 2 Camp after breakfast and head towards the key point of the route, the Lava Tower (4630m). Since this section of the trail comprises lots of ups and downs, it might not be easy and you may feel some discomfort. In order to get acclimatized to the altitude, it is necessary to spend a couple of hours here, so we will stop here for lunch. After lunch, it is time for descending down to Barranco Camp (3960m). At the camp, you will see the famous Barranco Wall which is notable for its colossal size and steep gradient.
Note: If you fall sick due to high elevation, you may avoid passing through the Lava Tower and instead follow the route used by the porters that lie at a lower elevation.

Day 04
Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp 4,035m / 13,239ft

Today, you will climb the Barranco Wall. Hiking up the wall is not so hard and takes around one hour to the summit. In order to avoid crowds of other groups, it is advised to make an early start from the camp after breakfast. On reaching the top of the wall, you will rest for a while and take photographs in front of the Kibo volcano. It is then time to take up a more difficult hike towards the Karanga Camp. After walking with an optimal pace on the frequent ascents and descents on the route, you will reach the camp and have your lunch. A couple of hours after lunch, you will hike further higher to get acclimatized and then walk back down to the camp.

Note: It is advised to take the acclimatization hikes seriously as they help you avoid getting altitude sickness and ultimately increase the chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro. It is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude that we recommend trekkers to do so as to speed up the acclimatization process.

Climb Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp
Uhuru Peak 5,895m / 19,341ft

You will wake up just before midnight. After having some tea and biscuits, you will begin the climb to the top of the Uhuru Peak. Relatively, it is an easy climb with only the high altitude as a challenging factor. Your trekking guide will monitor your physical and mental conditions throughout the entire journey. In about 6 hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m) located on the crater rim and make a brief stop with magnificent sunrise views. From this point onwards, you may encounter snow all the way in the 1-hour ascent to the last point of the climb – Uhuru Peak, the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. After spending some time drinking tea and taking photographs on the summit, you may descend to the nearest glacier is you wish. Then you will return back to Barafu Camp which will take around 3 hours. Here at the camp, you will rest and enjoy your hot lunch in the sun and after resting for a while, you will descend further to the Millennium Camp (3820m) to spend the night.

Meals

Climbing Kilimanjaro is totally a tent and camp trek. We sleep in camps, cook and eat at camps. Our well trained and experienced mountain trekking cooks and the team prepare delicious & hygienic breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Most meals are European and Indian curry style. We serve hot meals for breakfast and dinner but sometimes packed lunch that includes sandwich, egg, chicken, nuts, fruit, cake, juice, hot tea, etc. will be provided. There will also be a welcome dinner with authentic Tanzanian cuisine and a continental farewell dinner after the trip to all our guests.

Accommodation

Kilimanjaro climb is a camping-style climb where you cannot expect a hotel or guesthouse unlike expecting warm lodges during the trek to Everest Base Camp Trek in the Himalayas. Our camping crew will carry all the logistics that we need on the mountain for sleeping. Usually, we have a tent sharing basis for two people which is comfortable and enough space to keep your stuff inside the tent. If you want a single tent, it is possible for you to get, but will be charged a single supplement for USD 499 that includes two nights in Moshi hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route costs US $3,299 per person on a twin-sharing basis, which comes to about US $412 per day across the 8-day itinerary. The price covers permits, camping equipment, guides, porters, and meals on the mountain.

A single supplement of US $499 applies for climbers who want a private tent, which also covers two nights in a Moshi hotel.

The Lemosho Route is graded Demanding, and while it is not technically difficult, the rapid altitude gain to 5,895m (19,341ft) makes it a serious high-altitude challenge. It is considered one of the more scenic and better-acclimatizing routes on the mountain.

Summit night alone involves 9 to 12 hours of hiking in cold, high-altitude conditions.

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route is during the dry seasons of January to mid-March and June to October, when trails are clearer and summit conditions are more predictable. The rainy seasons make the route muddier and colder.

July to September is the most popular window, coinciding with peak international travel season. Read our full guide on Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro.

This Lemosho Route itinerary takes 8 days total, including arrival and departure days, with 6 days of trekking from Londorossi Gate to the summit and down to Mweka Gate. Longer 9 and 10-day variations are also available for extra acclimatization.

The extra time compared to shorter routes improves summit success rates by allowing better acclimatization.

The Lemosho Route suits fit beginners with no technical climbing experience required, since the trail itself is non-technical trekking. Prior hiking fitness and mental preparation for high altitude matter more than specialized mountaineering skills.

Himalayan Glacier reports a summit success rate of over 85% on its Kilimanjaro climbs, above the industry average of 65%.

The maximum altitude on the Lemosho Route is Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (19,341ft), the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. Climbers pass through Stella Point at 5,685m (18,652ft) just before reaching the top.

This represents a gain of well over 3,000m/9,242ft ( from Moshi, making acclimatization the central challenge of the climb.

Yes, Kilimanjaro National Park permits are mandatory for all climbers and are arranged automatically at Londorossi Gate as part of the trip. Climbers cannot enter the park or attempt the summit without a licensed guide and registered permit.

Permit and rescue registration fees are included in the trip cost and processed by the crew on Day 2.

Solo climbing without a guide is not permitted on Kilimanjaro by Tanzanian regulation, though a single traveler can book a private climb accompanied by a guide and support crew. Typically one climber is supported by around four crew members.

This rule applies to every route on the mountain, not just Lemosho, and exists for safety and search-and-rescue reasons.

Altitude sickness is the leading health risk on the Lemosho Route because of the rapid ascent to nearly 5,900m over just a few days. Guides monitor climbers closely and can recommend descent if symptoms become serious.

Staying well hydrated, avoiding alcohol, and considering preventive medication such as Diamox are commonly advised precautions.

Climbers sleep in mountain tents at established campsites including Shira 2, Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu, since the Lemosho Route is entirely camping-based rather than hut accommodation like the Marangu Route.

Tents are shared two to a tent unless a single supplement is booked, and the crew sets up camp ahead of each group’s arrival.

The Lemosho Route is considered one of the most scenic and best-acclimatizing paths up Kilimanjaro, with lower crowds than the Machame or Marangu routes and a longer approach that aids summit success, though it costs slightly more due to the extra distance.

Climbers wanting hut accommodation instead of camping should consider the Marangu Route instead.
