Reach atop Africa’s tallest Mt. Kilimanjaro via Marangu route and rejoice the triumph to achieve one of the Seven Summits

The Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu route is unique in a sense that it provides extra comfort to the travelers with their permanent sleeping huts. Spectacular vistas of the Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks during the hike are something to relish as you walk the gradual slopes and more direct paths. The Kilimanjaro Marangu route is considered by many as the easiest as well as the busiest among all other routes. Commonly known as the Coca Cola route, it was the first established commercial trekking route on Kilimanjaro. The Kilimanjaro Marangu route itinerary encompasses scenic detours past rainforest waterfalls and picturesque plant life before making the final ascent to the top. Considering an extra night at Horombo Hut for acclimatization is indeed very crucial on this route as the short time frame makes altitude adaptation quite difficult. After reaching the top of the peak, you will descend down walking the same path and exit through the same gate that you entered earlier.

Day 02
Trekking from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

In the morning, your guide will arrive at the hotel along with a support crew who will meet you and have another short briefing. After breakfast at your hotel, you will drive off to Kilimanjaro National Park’s eastern entrance, Marangu Gate (1860m). After acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, you will start trekking to Mandara Hut (2700m). During this section of the hike, you should expect rain, mud, and fog. You may also witness some wildlife including Colobus monkeys. You will have your lunch about midway up the trail. As you will be walking through the rainforest today, tropical showers can be expected so it is necessary that you have a raincoat with you particularly for this day besides the spare clothes. By the time you reach Mandara Hut, it is late afternoon or early evening. Mandara Hut consists of a group of wooden A-framed huts each featuring 6 – 8 sleeping bunks with solar generated lighting, flush toilets and water piped in from a nearby mountain stream.

Throughout the Marangu route, you will spend the nights in special wooden huts (guest houses), which offer a great alternative to those who do not want to sleep in tents.

Since it is your first day at this altitude, we strongly advise you to pay attention to the following instruction:

  • Stay away from drinking caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
  • Drink as much boiled water as possible, at frequent intervals. It is best for your body if you drink at least 4 liters each day on your trek.
  • To lessen symptoms of altitude sickness, take a Diamox pill. If you are allergic to certain medicines, it is recommended that you consult your doctor prior to your trip.
  • If you experience any discomfort associated with your breathing and start feeling sick or get a headache, tell your guide about your condition immediately.

Overnight in Mandara Hut.

Day 03
Trekking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

You will start trekking early from Mandara Hut after breakfast and head towards the second high-altitude camp, Horombo Hut (3720m). You will emerge from the rainforest into the alpine moorland and pass the Maundi Crater. When you reach your destination today, you will be treated with views of two volcanoes at once: Kibo and Mawenzi. During the trek, you will see some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular plants – the giant lobelia and the giant groundsel scattered throughout the landscape at this altitude. After you reach your sleeping hut, you will have lunch and rest for some time. Later, you will set out on an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut and later return to the Horombo Hut where dinner will be awaiting you.

Note: It is advised to take the acclimatization hikes seriously as they help you avoid getting altitude sickness and ultimately increase the chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro. It is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude that we recommend trekkers to do so as to speed up the acclimatization process. Overnight in Horombo Hut.

Day 04
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This extra day at Horombo Hut is for additional acclimatization. Most of the trek operators will take hikers towards the Mawenzi ridge passing the Zebra Rocks, which is about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours back to Horombo. At Horombo, you will meet both ascending and descending hikers with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. The day’s acclimatization hike will assist with the process of your body to get adapted to the high altitude environment. Coming back to Horombo after the short hike, you will take plenty of rest for the following day’s trek. Overnight in Horombo Hut.

Day 05
Trekking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After early morning breakfast, you will begin your ascent into the alpine desert habitat towards the Kibo Hut (4700m). There are two routes to Kibo. There is an upper route and a lower route to choose from. The upper route leads towards the Mawenzi Hut and is used by trekkers who use an extra acclimatization day in Horombo Hut. We will take the lower route which is much easier and an hour shorter, and it also passes the last watering point at 4130m. The actual trekking is not very difficult if trekkers stick to an appropriate pace to retain power and strength for the summit climb of the Uhuru Peak the following day. At Kibo Hut, you will be served lunch after which it is recommended that you sleep and rest as much as you can. Drink plenty of water and avoid any strenuous activities as you will be departing at night to make the final climb. Overnight in Kibo Hut.

Day 06
Climb Uhuru Peak; descend to Horombo Hut

You will wake up just before midnight. After having some tea and biscuits, you will begin the climb to the top of the Uhuru Peak. The route follows a rocky path to the first checkpoint, Hans Meyer Cave at 5150 meters. Your trekking guide will monitor your physical and mental conditions throughout the entire journey. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5681m) which is located on the Kibo’s crater rim. This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route. From this point onwards, you will encounter snow all the way to the last point of the climb – Uhuru Peak, the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. After spending some taking photographs on the summit, you may descend to the nearest glacier is you wish. Then you will begin descending back to Kibo Hut, have hot lunch, rest for a couple of hours and then continue down to Horombo Hut to spend the night. Overnight in Horombo Hut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Based on the research published by the Climb Kilimanjaro Guide, the average summit success rate across all the routes is 65%. The Machame route is considered to be the easiest one amongst all different routes to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. While all different routes on Kilimanjaro climb have their own difficulties and own experiences, Mt. Kilimanjaro is seriously a high-altitude mountain. Even though the normal routes of Kilimanjaro climb are not technically difficult, the altitude has hit hard and taken its toll on climbers annually thereby bringing the success rate down to 65%. Different operators have different success rates based on numerous factors and Himalayan Glacier has an impressive success rate of over 85% on its Kilimanjaro trips.
Climbing a mountain 5,895 m (19,341 ft.) high is definitely a dangerous thing to do. An estimated 50,000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year from which around 1,000 people are evacuated from the mountain and approximately 10 fatalities are reported. It means that the chance of death on the mountain is only 0.0002% which is practically zero. In other words, there is just one death per 5,000 climbers and the main cause of death is altitude sickness.
There are forested areas on the Kilimanjaro trail and obviously snakes are found in the cloud forests. Some of the species found on the lower slopes of the mountain are the Gabon, Green Mamba, Boomslang, and the Twig Snake. All snakes pose a potential threat so it is wise to always respect them and their habitat in case you encounter one on the way. Snakes are known to be highly sensitive to movement, so when they sense something arriving, they will clearly stay away from the main trails to save their own lives.
Yes and no! You may want to climb Kilimanjaro alone without other hikers or crowd – it is possible. But even then, you will be assisted by guides and porters. Although you will be the only trekker, you will not be alone in the truest sense as the Tanzanian Tourism Board does not permit trekking without a guide, porter and other crew members. The ratio of trekkers to support crew is 1:4 meaning that if you are the only climber, you will be assisted by 4 other members of your trekking company.
When you look at the difference between Kilimanjaro Climb and Everest Base Camp Trek, you are going to higher altitude much quicker on Kilimanjaro than Everest base camp. From Moshi (2,932 ft.) to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft.) it takes 4 to 6 days depending on the route, which is more than 16,000 ft. gain in altitude. From Kathmandu (4,600 ft.) to the base camp of Everest (17,599 ft.) it takes 8 to 9 days, which is almost 13,000 ft. gain in altitude but trekkers need to walk longer daily distance on the Everest Base Camp trek. In the Everest region, trekkers will sleep at teahouses or luxury lodges throughout the entire trip whereas on Kilimanjaro, except for the Marangu route, trekkers will have to sleep inside tents. While there are lots of ups and downs on the Everest trekking route, the summit night on Kilimanjaro is harder than anything on the entire Everest trail. The overall summit success rate on Kilimanjaro, as per the statistics is 65% while the success rate of Everest Base Camp is over 90%. So, Kilimanjaro climb is harder than Everest Base Camp trek especially because of the quick ascent and rapid altitude gain on Kilimanjaro.
The summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, also known as Uhuru Point, lies in the glacial zone with an average temperature hovering around -6°C (21°F) during day time. However, all summiting attempts begin around midnight in order to reach the Uhuru peak at dawn. So, you will be trekking during the night time when the temperatures range between -7 to -29°C (19 to -20°F).
