Frequently Asked Questions

The Makalu Base Camp Trek cost with Himalayan Glacier generally falls between $3800 and $4099 per person, depending on group size, season, and service level. This estimate reflects the trek’s remote 22-day itinerary and Himalayan Glacier’s mid-to-premium positioning, and should be confirmed against current pricing.

Group discounts on fixed departures can lower the per-person rate, while private or customized trips cost more.

Makalu Base Camp Trek difficulty is rated strenuous to challenging, among the toughest teahouse and camping treks in Nepal due to its remoteness, multiple high passes, and limited infrastructure. Trekkers need prior multi-day hiking experience and solid stamina, since daily walks of 6 to 8 hours over rugged terrain are common.

It is generally considered more demanding than the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp treks.

The best time for the Makalu Base Camp Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when skies are clear and temperatures are moderate. These windows offer the most stable weather for the Tumlingtar flight and the safest passage over Shipton La and the other high passes.

Winter and monsoon months bring snow-blocked passes, leech-prone lower trails, and unreliable mountain flights.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek with Himalayan Glacier runs 22 days from Kathmandu back to Kathmandu, covering the flight to Tumlingtar, the trek in and out of the Barun Valley, and return. Shorter 15 to 19 day versions exist with other operators, but the longer itinerary allows better acclimatization on this remote route.

Actual trekking days total around 16 to 18, with the remainder allocated to flights, buffer days, and Kathmandu arrival or departure.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is not recommended for first-time trekkers, since its remoteness, high passes, and limited teahouse infrastructure demand prior high-altitude trekking experience. Trekkers should ideally complete at least one multi-day Himalayan trek above 4,000m (13,123ft) before attempting this route.

Physically fit beginners with strong determination can complete it, but should hire an experienced guide and build in extra acclimatization days.

The maximum altitude on the Makalu Base Camp Trek is Makalu Base Camp itself, at approximately 5,000m (16,404ft), with Shipton La pass reaching around 4,210m (13,812ft) on the return route. These elevations place the trek firmly in high-altitude territory requiring careful, gradual acclimatization.

Exact base camp elevation varies slightly by source and route variation, cited between roughly 4,870m (15,977ft) and 5,250m (17,224ft).

The Makalu Base Camp Trek requires a Makalu Barun National Park entry permit and a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card, both arranged through Himalayan Glacier ahead of departure. Unlike Manaslu or Upper Mustang, no special restricted area permit is needed for this particular route.

Permits are checked at park entry points near Seduwa, so trekkers should carry printed copies and passport photos throughout the trek.

A licensed guide is strongly recommended, though not legally mandatory, for the Makalu Base Camp Trek given its remote trails, sparse signage, and limited emergency access compared to Everest or Annapurna. Himalayan Glacier includes an experienced guide and porter support in every package for safety and navigation.

Independent solo trekking is technically possible but discouraged, given the route’s isolation and unpredictable high-pass conditions.

Fitness training for the Makalu Base Camp Trek should begin at least two to three months in advance, combining cardio, hiking with a loaded backpack, and stair or hill training. Daily treks of 6 to 8 hours across steep, variable terrain demand solid aerobic endurance and leg strength.

Prior experience trekking above 4,000m (13,123ft) is highly beneficial given the route’s remoteness and limited support options.

Shipton La, also called Tutu La, at around 4,210m (13,812ft), is the signature high-pass challenge on the Makalu Base Camp Trek, crossed on the return route alongside Keke La and Kauma La. This exposed, often snow-covered crossing marks the trek’s single most demanding day.

Good weather timing, an early start, and a fit support crew are essential for a safe crossing.

Acclimatization on the Makalu Base Camp Trek is built into the itinerary through rest days at key points such as Khongma Danda, taken ahead of the trek’s highest elevations. These planned stops let the body adjust gradually before the push toward Base Camp and the high passes beyond.

The trek’s longer, gradual approach to Base Camp supports acclimatization better than shorter, compressed itineraries.

Altitude sickness risk on the Makalu Base Camp Trek is moderate to significant, since the trail crosses several points above 4,000m (13,123ft), including Shipton La at 4,210m (13,812ft) and Base Camp near 5,000m (16,404ft). Proper acclimatization, slow ascent, and hydration substantially reduce this risk.

Guides carry basic first-aid training and monitor trekkers for symptoms throughout the high-altitude sections of the route.

Accommodation on the Makalu Base Camp Trek mixes basic teahouses in the lower villages with camping in the higher, more remote sections where lodges are unavailable. Rooms are simple and typically twin-shared, with shared bathroom facilities becoming more common at higher elevations.

Himalayan Glacier arranges tents, kitchen staff, and camping equipment for the sections beyond teahouse coverage.

Food on the Makalu Base Camp Trek includes three daily meals such as dal bhat, noodle and pasta dishes, soups, and basic breakfast items, prepared by teahouse kitchens or the trekking crew’s camp cook. Meal variety narrows at higher elevations, where supply lines become more limited.

Boiled or treated drinking water is provided or available for purchase throughout the trek.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is more remote and physically demanding than the Everest Base Camp Trek, with fewer teahouses, less infrastructure, and far fewer trekkers on the trail. Everest Base Camp offers greater comfort and easier logistics, while Makalu rewards those seeking solitude and untouched wilderness.

Trekkers deciding between the two should weigh comfort and crowd levels against a more authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience.
