Luxury Lhasa, North Everest Base Camp & Kailash Mansarovar Yatra – Purang or Ali Exit

The Luxury Lhasa, North Everest Base Camp & Kailash Mansarovar Yatra – Purang or Ali Exit takes you overland across the Tibetan plateau on an 12-day journey that blends sacred pilgrimage with high-altitude adventure. You’ll begin in Lhasa, exploring the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and the monk debates at Sera Monastery, before driving west across some of the highest motorable passes on earth. Along the way, you’ll stand before the North Face of Mount Everest at Rongbuk, watch the turquoise waters of Pelkhu Tso and Lake Manasarovar unfold beside the road, and arrive at Darchen to begin the Kailash Kora, the sacred circuit around Mount Kailash that pilgrims of four faiths have walked for centuries.

Unlike Himalayan Glacier’s 14-day Lhasa-to-Kathmandu itinerary, this trip keeps you entirely within Tibet and China, ending with a flight from Purang or Ali back to Lhasa, where you can connect onward or extend your stay. You’ll travel with a licensed Tibetan guide throughout, stay in a mix of upscale hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse and simple guesthouses during the Kora, and follow an acclimatization-conscious itinerary designed for the demands of Tibet’s high plateau.

Once you reach the sacred shores of Lake Manasarovar, you’ll settle into the ritual rhythm of the Yatra: Havan and Puja by the lake, a drive to Darchen, and three days completing the Kailash Kora, the clockwise circuit around Mount Kailash that pilgrims have walked for centuries. You’ll stand before the mountain’s golden north face at Dirapuk, cross Dolma La Pass at 5,650m/18,536ft, and pass Gauri Kund on your way back down. This route suits you well if you’ve already got time built into a Tibet trip, are joining a larger group partway through, or simply want the shortest possible path to a profoundly demanding and rewarding pilgrimage.

Luxury Lhasa Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Highlights

  • Sunrise over Everest’s North Face: Watch the world’s highest peak catch the morning light from the Rongbuk / Everest Base Camp region, a view very few travelers ever see from Tibet’s side.
  • The Golden North Face of Kailash: Stand at Dirapuk Monastery for one of the most revered views of Mount Kailash, especially striking in the early morning light.
  • Complete the Kailash Kora: Walk the sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash across the 5,650m/18,538ft Dolma-La Pass, past holy Gauri Kund.
  • Sacred waters of Lake Manasarovar: Take part in Havan/Puja at the lake considered the source of spiritual purification for four faiths.
  • Cross Tibet’s high plateau overland: Pass Yamdrok Lake, Karo La Glacier, and Gyatso La among the highest drivable roads on earth.
  • A faster finish: Skip the extra overland days to Kathmandu and fly out directly from Purang or Ali.

Our tour of Lhasa begins with a guided visit to the majestic Potala Palace, an architectural masterpiece rising 13 stories above the city and once the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. In the afternoon, we visit the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, regarded by pilgrims as the most sacred temple in Tibet. The day concludes with a walk along Barkhor Street, where pilgrims circle the temple while spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras.

Kailash Kora Day 1 — Darchen → Yamdwar → Dherapuk

Parikrama to Dherapuk

After a short drive from Darchen (4,700m/15,421ft) to Yamdwar, you’ll walk through the sacred western valley to Dherapuk Monastery (~5,100m/16,733ft), which faces Mount Kailash’s majestic North Face. Optional, additional cost: a side walk toward Charan Sparsh Darshan, offering a closer view of Mount Kailash, may be possible from Dirapuk, subject to government permission and access regulations. Additional guide and permit fees apply. Please consult your guide regarding availability and arrangements.

Staying overnight at Dherapuk gives you two things worth savoring: the golden North Face of Kailash in the morning light, and a genuine rest before the hardest day of the Kora. If you’re not planning to continue the full circuit, this is also the point where you can turn back after taking in the Charan Sparsh view.

Kailash Kora Day 2 — Dherapuk → Dolma-La Pass → Zutulpuk or Return to Darchen
Dolma-La Pass 5,650m / 18,538ft

You’ll start early for the push over Dolma-La Pass, the highest and most demanding point of the Kora. From the pass, you’ll descend past the sacred Gauri Kund before continuing down into the next valley, where a tea shop area marks a natural break point.

Optional, additional cost: at this tea shop / vehicle point, you can choose to skip the final stretch to Zutulpuk and take vehicle assistance back to Darchen instead, road and weather conditions dependent, and arranged at an additional cost. Everyone else continues on to overnight at Zutulpuk.

Distance note: the full Kailash Kora is often quoted as ~52km/~32mi Darchen-to-Darchen; today’s optional vehicle-assist segment means your actual walking distance may be shorter for comfort and safety.

Zutulpuk → Darchen

After breakfast, you’ll set out on a shorter, easier hike of about 8km from Zutulpuk to the end of the Kora, then continue on to Darchen (4,700m/15,421ft). Once you arrive, it’s a day for rest and celebration, you’ve completed one of the world’s most demanding pilgrimages.

Optional, additional cost: depending on your available time, weather conditions, health, and government permissions, optional excursions may be arranged to the base of Nandi Parvat, Ashtapad for a sacred view of Mount Kailash, or Tirthapuri, a spiritual site associated with Guru Rinpoche. All excursions are subject to local regulations, permit approval, and site accessibility. Additional guide and permit fees apply. What Does "Luxury" Really Mean on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra?

Luxury on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra means better accommodation, safer logistics, enhanced medical preparedness, and personalized service, not urban five-star hotels. In cities like Kathmandu and Lhasa, genuine 4–5 star comfort is available. But during the Kailash Kora, luxury means the best guesthouses, heated beds, and stronger medical support in extreme high-altitude terrain.Read the Full Guide →

Best Time for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Season Conditions
May–June Cool mornings, mild days, clear mountain views; peak season, book early
July–August Warmer, with periodic monsoon cloud that can obscure Kailash views on some days
September Cool, dry, generally clear skies; one of the best windows for visibility
October–April Route largely closed to tourism due to snow and extreme cold at altitude

May through September is the operating season for this route, with May-June and September generally offering the clearest views of Mount Kailash and the most stable flying and driving conditions to Ali. For a full month-by-month breakdown, see our dedicated guide on the best time to visit Mount Kailash.

How Difficult Is the Luxury Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is rated challenging, primarily because of altitude rather than technical terrain. No mountaineering or prior trekking skill is required.

Fitness Requirements

  • Ability to walk 3-6 hours on Kora days, including one demanding day to Dolma La Pass
  • Two months of cardio preparation is recommended: walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing
  • Most of the route sits above 4,500 m / 14,764 ft, where oxygen levels are significantly lower than sea level

Altitude and Acclimatization

Himalayan Glacier guides build acclimatization stops into the itinerary at Kyirong and Saga before the group reaches the Kora. Oxygen cylinders are carried in vehicles, and emergency oxygen is available during the Charan Sparsh and Kailash Kora sections. Trekkers who follow the pacing set by the tour leader and stay well hydrated typically manage the altitude without serious issues.

Is This Trip Suitable for Beginners?

First-time high-altitude travelers can join, provided they arrive reasonably fit and follow the acclimatization schedule. Travelers with a history of heart, lung or blood pressure conditions should get medical clearance before booking. For a full breakdown of daily walking distances, see our guide on how difficult the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra really is.

Permits and Visa Information

Entering Tibet for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra requires a Tibet Travel Permit plus a Chinese Group Visa, both arranged by Himalayan Glacier and included in the package price. A few points worth knowing before you book:

  • Passport handling: Physical passports are collected in Kathmandu on Day 1 for priority visa processing through the embassy
  • Early arrival: Travelers whose China visa is processed in Kathmandu should plan to arrive 2 to 4 days before the official departure date
  • Nepal visa: Available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or online in advance, and is not included in the package

For a step-by-step breakdown of documentation and timing, see our guide on how to plan a successful Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, or our dedicated resource for planning the Kailash Yatra from the USA.

Why Choose Himalayan Glacier for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Himalayan Glacier has operated Himalayan journeys since 1992 from its Kathmandu base, with a dedicated US office in Baltimore, Maryland handling international support and bookings. On the ground, that translates into a few things that matter on a high-altitude pilgrimage like this one:

  • Local operational control: No outsourcing or middlemen, since the Kathmandu team manages hotels, permits and staff directly
  • Experienced Yatra leadership: English-speaking Nepali tour leaders and Tibetan guides who have run this route repeatedly and know the border, weather and altitude patterns
  • Private kitchen and catering: A dedicated in-house kitchen crew travels with the group, which matters for both hygiene and dietary consistency at altitude
  • Oxygen support built in: Oxygen cylinders in vehicles and emergency oxygen during the Kora, not an optional add-on
  • Route flexibility: Helicopter or overland border crossing, and multiple joining points via Lhasa for travelers with limited time off
  • US-based support: A Baltimore office that helps international travelers plan, pay in installments, and get questions answered in their own time zone

May through September offers the most stable weather and the safest conditions at Dolma-La Pass. See our best time to visit Mount Kailash guide for a month-by-month breakdown.

Yes. You’ll need a Tibet Travel Permit regardless of your entry point, plus either a Chinese Group Visa (entering via Nepal) or an individual China L Visa (entering via mainland China). See our Tibet Travel Permit guide for details.

Focus on layered thermal clothing, a proper down jacket, ankle-support hiking boots, and cold-weather gear for nights near or above 5,000m/16,404ft. See our complete Kailash Mansarovar Yatra packing list for the full checklist.

You’ll stay in basic guesthouses at Dherapuk and Zutulpuk, with simple, shared facilities. Before and after the Kora, you’re back in Western-standard hotels in Darchen and along the route.

Breakfast is included every day. From Day 6 through Day 11, Saga through the end of the Kora, lunch and dinner are also included.

Dolma-La Pass, at 5,650m/18,538ft, is the highest and most physically demanding point of the three-day Kora. The rest of the circuit involves lower-altitude walking between Darchen, Dherapuk, and Zutulpuk.

Yes. On Day 9, there’s an optional vehicle-assist shortcut that lets you skip the final stretch to Zutulpuk and return directly to Darchen, road and weather conditions permitting. Discuss this option with your guide as needed.
