Himalayan Glacier Adventures, LLC ® is the #1 adventure travel company guiding Kailash Yatra, with a 99% success rate.

This is a 12-day luxury pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar that starts in Kathmandu and ends with a flight to Lhasa from Purang, instead of driving back the way you came.

Duration: 12 days (2-4 extra nights in Kathmandu if your China visa is processed there)
Max altitude: Dolma La Pass, 5,650 m / 18,538 ft
Route: Kathmandu – Kyirong – Saga – Lake Manasarovar – Darchen – Kailash Kora – Purang/Ali – Lhasa (fly out)
Difficulty: Strenuous due to altitude, moderate in terrain
Best time: May to early October
Who it suits: Pilgrims who want a one-way itinerary, less backtracking, and the option to extend their trip in Lhasa

Luxury Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with Lhasa Exit Overview

The Luxury Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with Lhasa Exit is a 12-day pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, built for travelers who want the full spiritual depth of the Yatra without an out-and-back overland journey. Instead of retracing the route to Kathmandu, this itinerary finishes at Lhasa, where you fly onward from Purang/Ali, either to connect home or to extend your stay in Tibet’s cultural capital.

The journey opens in Kathmandu with darshan at Pashupatinath and a private VIP temple circuit, then crosses into Tibet by private vehicle to Kyirong, with an optional helicopter upgrade available for the border segment at additional cost. From there, the route climbs steadily across the Tibetan plateau through Saga to the shores of Lake Manasarovar, then on to Darchen for the Kailash Kora, the sacred circuit around Mount Kailash completed over three days, crossing the Dolma La Pass at 5,650 m / 18,538 ft.

Accommodation throughout is the best available at each stage, 5-star hotels in Kathmandu, premium boutique and oxygen-enriched hotels in Tibet, and guest houses during the Kora itself, where infrastructure is limited by location rather than by choice. Himalayan Glacier guides recommend this route for pilgrims who have some flexibility on their return journey and want to avoid doubling back over the same roads after already completing the Kora.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Highlights

  • Private VIP darshan at Pashupatinath, Guheswari Shaktipeeth and Budhanilkantha before departure
  • Optional helicopter upgrade for the Nepal-Tibet border crossing (additional cost, weather permitting) the standard route is by private overland vehicle
  • Havan puja at Lake Manasarovar, with views of Mount Gurla Mandhata and Rakshastal
  • Three-day Kailash Kora with an overnight at Dirapuk facing the golden North Face of Kailash
  • Crossing Dolma La Pass, the spiritual and physical high point of the Yatra
  • Optional Charan Sparsh darshan and visits to Ashtapad or Tirthapuri (subject to permit availability)
  • One-way finish via Purang or Ali with a flight to Lhasa, avoiding a repeat overland drive
  • 5-star hotels in Kathmandu and the best available premium accommodation across Tibet

Important Note

Due to the devastating floods that struck the Rasuwagadhi–Kyirong border region on August 26, 2026, the usual overland route from Kathmandu to Tibet has been disrupted. At present, the route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra remains subject to approval by the relevant Chinese authorities.

The route outlined in this itinerary is therefore provisional and may change depending on border conditions, official permissions, and travel regulations. Himalayan Glacier will confirm the approved route and make the necessary adjustments to the itinerary before departure. Any alternative travel arrangements will be communicated to guests in advance.

Begin Your Yatra With Complete Peace of Mind

A journey to Mount Kailash is about devotion, not logistics. We handle the planning, permits, and arrangements so you can immerse yourself in the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage.

Day 01
Arrival in Kathmandu – Welcome Dinner
Kathmandu 1,350m / 4,429ft
Kailash Yatra Meeting at Hotel Aloft

A private airport concierge team meets you on arrival, assists with baggage, and transfers you to your hotel in a luxury vehicle. A dedicated operations manager collects passports for priority Tibet visa processing.

The rest of the day is free to rest and adjust, followed by a welcome dinner in the evening to meet your Himalayan Glacier trip leader and fellow travelers ahead of the Yatra.

If your China visa is being processed in Kathmandu, you’ll need to arrive 2-4 days before departure while Himalayan Glacier handles the logistics; your hotel stay for these extra days is not included. These days are fully customizable, relax at the hotel, or add one of the following optional, additional-cost experiences:

Muktinath by Private Helicopter: a same-day private helicopter flight to the sacred Muktinath Temple, returning to Kathmandu by afternoon
Muktinath Overland & Flight: a 3-day/2-night journey combining regional flights and overland roads to Muktinath
Lumbini Pilgrimage: a 1 or 2-day excursion by air to the birthplace of Lord Buddha
Janakpur Cultural Day Trip: a day trip to the historic Janaki Temple, honoring Goddess Sita and Lord Ram
Everest Champagne Breakfast: an early-morning helicopter flight to Mount Everest for a scenic breakfast, or a Twin Otter flight at 25,000 feet, weather permitting
Sacred Valley Heritage & Shakti Peeth Tour: a guided visit to Doleshwor Mahadev, Chandragiri Hills, Budhanilkantha, and the Linga Bhairavi Temple, plus Kathmandu’s historic royal squares
High-Altitude Lakes by Helicopter: an aerial tour to Damodar Kunda or Tilicho (Kagbhusundi) Lake

If you already hold a China L Visa, you only need to arrive on the official Day 1 – your tour begins immediately with airport reception and check-in.

Acclimatization Day in Kyirong

Today, you can use this day to acclimatize gradually before altitude increases further. A gentle valley walk winds past terraced fields and prayer flags strung along the hillsides, with the Kyirong valley’s forested slopes still green at this stage of the route, a contrast to the barren plateau ahead.

The pace is deliberately unhurried; your guides watch for early signs of altitude discomfort such as headache or breathlessness, and the day includes rest, warm tea, and oxygen saturation checks with the expedition leader. You’ll likely find this the last genuinely relaxed day before the Yatra’s demands begin in earnest.

Drive from Kerung to Saga

Today is a significant ascent onto the open high-altitude plains of Saga, and the day you’ll likely feel Tibet’s true scale come into view: the road climbs out of Kyirong’s forested valley onto a vast, treeless plateau where the horizon stretches uninterrupted for miles. Wide Himalayan views open up along the way, with remote settlements, grazing yak herds, and prayer flags marking the passes.

The long drive is tiring but not physically demanding, and this is also where fellow Yatris traveling overland from Lhasa join your group for the Kora ahead, by evening in Saga, you’ll notice the air is noticeably thinner and colder than Kyirong.

Today, you will take a long but spiritually significant drive across the plateau to Lake Manasarovar, passing Mount Gurla Mandhata and the mystical Rakshastal. Your first glimpse of Manasarovar’s turquoise water against the barren plateau is likely to be one of the most emotional moments of your entire Yatra, after days of travel, the lake’s stillness and color feel like a genuine arrival rather than just another stop.

The evening is reserved for quiet reflection at the lake, and you may want to spend time simply sitting by the shore as the light changes over the water.

You will be joining a morning Havan/Puja at the sacred lake, typically held at sunrise while the water is calm and the cold is sharpest, many find this ceremony, with chanting and offerings at the water’s edge, one of the most moving rituals of the Yatra.

You will then drive to Darchen, the starting point for the Kailash Kora, with Mount Kailash itself coming into occasional view along the way. The evening briefing and gear check mark a shift in mood as you prepare mentally and physically for the three demanding days of walking ahead.

Kailash Kora Day 1 - Darchen to Dirapuk
Dehara Puk 5,100m / 16,733ft
Parikrama to Dherapuk

A drive to Yamdwar marks the start of your trek, followed by a walk through the sacred western valley to Dirapuk Monastery, which faces Kailash’s North Face. If you wish to go further, an optional side walk offers Charan Sparsh darshan (conditions permitting).

Highlights of Dirapuk:

  • Opportunity for Charan Sparsh darshan: staying overnight at Dirapuk gives you the chance to walk toward the highest permitted point for Charan Sparsh, for a closer view of Mount Kailash
  • Golden North Face of Mount Kailash: Dirapuk offers one of the most sacred views of the Golden North Face, especially striking in early morning light
  • Better rest and acclimatization: the overnight stop after your first day’s walk from Yamdwar gives your body more time to adjust before the Dolma La Pass crossing; if you’d prefer not to continue the full Kora, you also have the option to hike to Charan Sparsh and spend time viewing the Golden North Face instead.

This is the most physically demanding day of your Yatra: an early start for the Dolma La Pass, an ascent of +550 m / 1,804 ft from Dirapuk, followed by a descent past sacred Gauri Kund at 5,608 m / 18,398 ft.

Vehicle assistance is available at a mid-route point if you’d prefer to return directly to Darchen rather than continue to Zutulpuk. The full Kailash Kora is commonly cited as ~52 km / 32 mi Darchen-to-Darchen; with today’s optional vehicle segment, your walking distance is managed for comfort and safety.

Zutulpuk to Darchen - Kora Completion
Darchen 4,700m / 15,421ft
Landscape seen during drive to Saga

A shorter, easier walk completes your Kailash Kora. This final stretch tends to feel physically lighter but emotionally heavier than the days before, the sense of having completed a full circuit around Mount Kailash will likely sink in gradually rather than all at once.

Back in Darchen, the mood shifts to genuine celebration, tired legs, sore shoulders, and a strong sense of accomplishment. The rest of the day is yours to rest and celebrate, with several optional activities depending on time, weather, health, and local permission:

  • A drive to the base of Nandi Parvat, Ashtapad, and Gyandrak Gompa
  • An optional visit to Ashtapad for another sacred view of Mount Kailash
  • An optional visit to Tirthapuri, a spiritual site connected with Guru Rinpoche

What Does "Luxury" Really Mean on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra?

Luxury on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra means better accommodation, safer logistics, enhanced medical preparedness, and personalized service, not urban five-star hotels. In cities like Kathmandu and Lhasa, genuine 4–5 star comfort is available. But during the Kailash Kora, luxury means the best guesthouses, heated beds, and stronger medical support in extreme high-altitude terrain.Read the Full Guide →

Meals are full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) from Day 3 onward, once the group is on the road through Tibet, plus a welcome dinner in Kathmandu on Day 1. Kitchens catering to this Yatra typically prepare vegetarian meals suited to Hindu dietary practices, with onion- and garlic-free options available on request; vegan and gluten-free needs can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Drinking water in Tibet is not safe from the tap, so bottled or treated water is supplied throughout. Meals in Lhasa are excluded, giving you the flexibility to explore the city’s diverse restaurants and dine at your own pace.

Best Time for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Season Weather Trail & Visibility Crowd Level
Spring (April-June) Cool mornings, mild days, low precipitation Clear mountain views, stable road conditions Peak season, book early
Summer/Monsoon (July-August) Warmer, with periodic monsoon rain and cloud Occasional fog can obscure Kailash views; roads can be affected by landslides on the Nepal side Moderate
Autumn (September) Cool, dry, generally clear skies Excellent visibility, considered a top window alongside spring High
Winter (October-March) Very cold, sub-zero at altitude Route largely closed to tourism due to snow and extreme cold Not operated

Himalayan Glacier guides generally recommend April to June or September for the clearest views of Mount Kailash and the most stable travel conditions. For a full month-by-month breakdown of temperatures, crowd levels and trail conditions, see our dedicated guide on the best time to visit Mount Kailash.

How Difficult Is the Luxury Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is rated challenging, primarily because of altitude rather than technical terrain. No mountaineering or prior trekking skill is required.

Fitness Requirements

  • Ability to walk 3-6 hours on Kora days, including one demanding day to Dolma La Pass
  • Two months of cardio preparation is recommended: walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing
  • Most of the route sits above 4,500 m / 14,764 ft, where oxygen levels are significantly lower than sea level

Altitude and Acclimatization

Himalayan Glacier guides build acclimatization stops into the itinerary at Kyirong and Saga before the group reaches the Kora. Oxygen cylinders are carried in vehicles, and emergency oxygen is available during the Charan Sparsh and Kailash Kora sections. Trekkers who follow the pacing set by the tour leader and stay well hydrated typically manage the altitude without serious issues.

Is This Trip Suitable for Beginners?

First-time high-altitude travelers can join, provided they arrive reasonably fit and follow the acclimatization schedule. Travelers with a history of heart, lung or blood pressure conditions should get medical clearance before booking. For a full breakdown of daily walking distances, see our guide on how difficult the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra really is.

Permits and Visa Information

Entering Tibet for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra requires a Tibet Travel Permit plus a Chinese Group Visa, both arranged by Himalayan Glacier and included in the package price. A few points worth knowing before you book:

  • Passport handling: Physical passports are collected in Kathmandu on Day 1 for priority visa processing through the embassy
  • Early arrival: Travelers whose China visa is processed in Kathmandu should plan to arrive 2 to 4 days before the official departure date
  • Nepal visa: Available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or online in advance, and is not included in the package

For a step-by-step breakdown of documentation and timing, see our guide on how to plan a successful Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, or our dedicated resource for planning the Kailash Yatra from the USA.

Why Choose Himalayan Glacier for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Himalayan Glacier has operated Himalayan journeys since 1992 from its Kathmandu base, with a dedicated US office in Baltimore, Maryland handling international support and bookings. On the ground, that translates into a few things that matter on a high-altitude pilgrimage like this one:

  • Local operational control: No outsourcing or middlemen, since the Kathmandu team manages hotels, permits and staff directly
  • Experienced Yatra leadership: English-speaking Nepali tour leaders and Tibetan guides who have run this route repeatedly and know the border, weather and altitude patterns
  • Private kitchen and catering: A dedicated in-house kitchen crew travels with the group, which matters for both hygiene and dietary consistency at altitude
  • Oxygen support built in: Oxygen cylinders in vehicles and emergency oxygen during the Kora, not an optional add-on
  • Route flexibility: Helicopter or overland border crossing, and multiple joining points via Lhasa for travelers with limited time off
  • US-based support: A Baltimore office that helps international travelers plan, pay in installments, and get questions answered in their own time zone

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lhasa Exit itinerary ends at Lhasa with a flight from Purang/Ali, rather than returning overland to Kathmandu like our standard Luxury Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It’s a one-way route built for you if you want to avoid retracing the same roads, or if you plan to extend your trip in Lhasa.

It’s rated strenuous mainly due to altitude, not technical terrain. The three-day Kailash Kora covers roughly 30 km / 19 mi, with Dolma La Pass at 5,650 m / 18,538 ft as the toughest single day.

May through early October, when the plateau roads and the Kailash Kora are reliably open. June to September sees the highest numbers of pilgrims.

Yes, with proper preparation. No technical climbing skills are required, but a good base level of fitness and 4-6 weeks of walking training beforehand are recommended.
