America’s Himalayan specialists. Baltimore-based. Kathmandu-owned. Since 1992.
Guided tours across the Himalayas, Africa, and South America, operated by our own team and trusted partners, booked through our US office in Baltimore.
The mountains were never just geology. They were teachers. And if more people could experience this beauty firsthand, they would fall in love with the world — and do everything they could to protect it.
Over 30 years ago, our founder Sagar Pandey—then a geology graduate preparing for a future in mining engineering—found himself captivated by Nepal’s raw, untouched beauty. His academic explorations took him deep into mountains, valleys, and remote landscapes, but what he discovered went far beyond geology. He uncovered a calling.
Inspired by the soul-stirring majesty of the Himalayas, Sagar founded Himalayan Glacier, fueled by the dream of sharing Nepal’s splendors with travelers searching for authenticity, meaning, and connection. What began as a humble passion project has grown into a global adventure movement, made possible by the loyalty and enthusiasm of explorers like you.
So in 1992, instead of becoming a mining engineer, Sagar Pandey founded Himalayan Glacier in Kathmandu. He had no outside investment, no corporate template, no precedent for exactly what he was building. He had something more durable: a firsthand understanding of what these mountains could do to a person who was paying attention. The mission was then, and remains now, exactly that — to share the Himalaya with travelers from around the world, and through that sharing, build a generation of travelers who care about the places they visit.
There are entrepreneurs who build successful businesses. And there are those who, in building their businesses, reshape the industries they operate in. Sagar belongs to the second category. From the earliest years of Himalayan Glacier, he understood that the long-term health of adventure travel in Nepal depended on something broader than any single company’s success. It depended on standards, collective action, and the kind of sustained advocacy that most business owners never find time for.
He found time. And over three decades, those decisions have had measurable impact on tens of thousands of trekkers, hundreds of trekking companies, and the mountain communities that depend on a healthy tourism ecosystem to survive.
As current president of TAAN — representing 1,000+ licensed trekking agencies across Nepal — Sagar is shaping national policy on guide licensing, permit systems, porter welfare, and the regulatory framework governing every trek sold in the country. The decisions made in this role directly affect every trekker who sets foot on a Nepali trail.
As General Secretary, Sagar was instrumental in the administrative and policy reform period following Nepal’s post-earthquake recovery — a time when the entire tourism sector had to be rebuilt, re-regulated, and re-presented to the world. His work helped stabilise the industry at one of its most vulnerable moments.
KEEP is Nepal’s foremost environmental education organisation for the trekking sector — dedicated to reducing the ecological footprint of trekking through traveler education, waste management advocacy, and community empowerment. Sagar leads the organisation’s strategic direction at a time when Nepal’s mountain environment faces increasing pressure.
Long before porter welfare became an industry talking point, Himalayan Glacier was paying guides above minimum wage, capping loads at 25kg, and providing mountain-equivalent accommodation for every porter. These are not compliance measures. They were decisions made in the 1990s by someone who believed the people who carry the mountains deserve to be treated like the irreplaceable professionals they are..
In those early years, the team walked every trail they sold. They drank butter tea in homes along the Annapurna Circuit, learned the names of the porters who carried more than gear — they carried the soul of every trip. And they watched first-time trekkers stand at Everest Base Camp with tears streaming, people who had expected a mountain and encountered something they did not have words for. It was not a vacation. It was a turning point.
As word spread, so did the reach. Travelers who came for EBC asked to be taken to Bhutan. Climbers who summited in Nepal asked about Kilimanjaro, the Inca Trail, Tibet. The company expanded the same way it approached a high pass: deliberately, one careful step at a time, never faster than the relationships required. Today, Himalayan Glacier leads adventures across Nepal, India, Bhutan, Tibet, Peru, and Tanzania.
In 2019, the next generation of the Pandey family stepped into the business. A Baltimore office opened so North American travelers could reach a real person in their own time zone. A London presence followed. The same warmth that began in Kathmandu now extends across time zones — with the same family still at the centre of it. Our growth has never been a departure from our roots. It is an extension of them.
Sagar Pandey founds the company, driven by years of Himalayan field work and a conviction that transformative travel creates the world’s best conservationists.
EBC, Annapurna Circuit, and Kailash Mansarovar Yatra become core products. Bhutan and Tibet routes open as years-long relationships with regional authorities are built.
A pivotal period for Nepal’s tourism. Sagar uses the role to advocate for industry reform, guide licensing, and the responsible trekking framework that shapes the sector today.
The next generation of the Pandey family steps in. Baltimore office ensures North American travelers reach a real person in their time zone. London presence follows.
Elected to the highest position in Nepal’s trekking industry, simultaneously leading HG’s most ambitious international growth phase.
Baltimore. Kathmandu. The mountain routes. The same family. The same conviction that travel, done right, makes the world feel smaller — and its travelers better.
“We’re not a Western company outsourcing to local partners. We are the local partner – with deep relationships in every region we operate, built over decades. When you travel with us, you’re not at the end of a long supply chain. You’re with the team itself.”
Most large international operators run on a DMC model: your booking passes through a head office and a local destination-management company before it reaches an in-country guide. Himalayan Glacier removes those layers – we’re headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, with our own operations team in Thamel, Kathmandu since 1992. The teahouse owners on the EBC route know our guides by name. That’s 33 years of uninterrupted relationship-building no newly-arrived operator can replicate.
“No two travelers are the same, so no two of our trips are either. Whether you’re a first-time trekker, a returning climber, or a family wanting your children to see something that will outlast their childhood, we shape the journey around you – not the other way around.”
Large international operators primarily run fixed-date group departures with minimum group sizes – if the date you want is full, you wait for the next one. Himalayan Glacier specializes in fully private departures on any date with 72 hours’ notice, from a single traveler upward. No minimum group size. One person, two, twelve – each gets a bespoke itinerary, a private guide, and a pace set by them.
“Across our decades of operation, we’ve maintained a zero-fatality record. That isn’t a marketing line. It’s the result of certified guides, proper acclimatization protocols, careful staff ratios, and emergency plans we hope to never use. Adventure should stretch you. It should never gamble with you.”
At 5,000 metres, the difference between a guided experience and a guided emergency is not luck — it is the quality of the guide, the clarity of the protocol, and the speed of the evacuation decision. All HG guides are NTB-licensed and WFR (Wilderness First Responder) certified. They carry emergency oxygen, a pulse oximeter, and a satellite phone on every departure. Evacuation decisions are made by our Kathmandu team directly — not routed through a DMC.
“When you book with Himalayan Glacier, you’re not handed off through a queue. One of our destination specialists works with you from your first inquiry to your post-trip debrief, answering questions on WhatsApp at odd hours, adjusting your itinerary when life changes.”
Large operators run enquiries through a contact centre. You submit a form, a different person calls back, a third sends the proposal, a fourth handles the booking. By departure, no single person knows your trip. At Himalayan Glacier, the person who answers your WhatsApp at 11pm about a Lukla weather story knows your booking number, departure date, guide’s name, and teahouse allocations. That is not a process. That is a relationship.
What the relationship covers
“Porter welfare, Leave No Trace practices, community partnerships, and accreditations from ATTA, PATA, ASTA, BBB, KRTO, and Feefo Gold Trusted Service aren’t badges we collect. They’re the standards we hold ourselves to, every season.”
Responsible tourism has become a marketing category. Every operator claims it. Very few document it specifically. All HG porters are employed directly – not sourced from a labour contractor. Paid above Nepal legal minimum wage. Loads within the 25kg legal maximum. Accommodation equivalent to the trekking group. No child porters. Standards in place since 1992 – not because certification required it, but because these are our people, not a resource.
Accreditations and verified standards
What large group operators rarely build for Large international operators are built around fixed-date group departures, usually with minimum group sizes. Himalayan Glacier is a private and small-group specialist that also runs shared departures – so private travel isn’t a premium add-on bolted onto a group product. It’s the core of what we do. That structural difference is the reason couples, families, school groups, corporate teams, and serious climbers consistently choose us.
On a private HG trek, the guide’s pace is your pace. Rest days are when you need them. The itinerary can extend, compress, or add a peak based on how you’re acclimatizing. That’s what private travel actually means – available to anyone who books with us, at any group size, on any date.
