Experience the wonders of hiking to Machu Picchu and the iconic Rainbow Mountain in the Andes of Peru.
Hike to Machu Picchu and the Rainbow Mountain in Peru is perfect for those who wish to know the ancient Incan history and enjoy outdoor adventure. Hiking up to the multicolor mountain in Peru is bound to be unlike anything else one has ever seen on an adventurous trip. Exploring the Peruvian highlands’ living history and breathtaking scenery in this incredible experience will leave you dumbfounded. In the sacred valley, you will visit the Pisac Market and Ollantaytambo to witness the monumental architecture. Next, you will begin hiking to reach the Machu Picchu citadel high above the Urubamba Mountain Range.
The final phase of this tour will be a short hike up to the Rainbow Mountain, which is locally known as Vinicunca, or the mountain of seven colors. The elevation of Rainbow Mountain is 5,200m/17,060ft, and while the trail is mostly flat until the final ascent, the high altitude may pose challenges for some hikers. We recommend our clients walk at a relaxed pace during this hike. The best time to hike to Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain is during Dry Season (May to September). These months offer predictable weather, and the chances of clear skies for vibrant photos of the colorful mountain and excellent visibility of the archaeological site are higher.

Arrive at Cusco International Airport, Peru
Cusco 3,400m / 11,155ft
On arrival at Cusco International Airport in Peru, we will be greeted by a representative of Himalayan Glacier who will drop us off at our designated hotel in Cusco. Since Cusco is located at a high altitude, we recommend that you take plenty of rest and rehydrate in your hotel room to take upon the challenges in the upcoming days. In the afternoon at 5:0 pm, we will briefly discuss our trip itinerary with our trip leader. We would probably want to go to bed early after dinner today. Overnight in Cusco.

Sacred Valley Tour; Pisac and Ollantaytambo Ruins
Pisac 2,972m / 9,751ft
Today, following an early breakfast at our hotel, we will commence our exploration of the Sacred Valley with visits to Pisac (2,972m/9,750ft.) and Ollantaytambo (2,792m/9,160ft.). Pisac, situated along the Vilcanota River, is renowned for its Incan ruins and bustling market, which attracts many tourists. While at Pisac, we’ll tour the Archaeological Park, which includes the largest Incan burial site, a temple complex featuring a sun temple, ceremonial altars, and intricate water channels. After concluding our visit here, we’ll have some free time to wander through the Pisac local market.
Ollantaytambo showcases magnificent architecture with remarkable stonework and advanced agricultural techniques. The key attractions in this town include the Temple of the Sun, perched atop a pyramid of seventeen terraces, and the Terraces, a distinctive feature of the Sacred Valley. Following a full day of exploration, we will return to our hotel in Cusco. This day tour will help our bodies acclimatize to the lower oxygen levels while offering an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture of the Sacred Valley. We will spend the night in Cusco.

Drive to Piscacucho (KM 82); trek to Wayllabamba
Wayllabamba 3,100m / 10,171ft
To begin the classic Inca Trail trek adventure, we’ll pick you up from your place in Cusco between 4 and 5 AM. We’ll then take a 1.5-hour journey in our private transport to reach the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our starting point is Kilometer 82 (2,700m/8,858ft.), the first checkpoint of the Inca Trail. Here, you’ll meet our team, and we’ll cross the Urubamba River to officially start our 4-day hike. The first day is relatively easy as we visit a city like Patallacta (2602m / 8537 ft), an essential center with administrative, economic, and religious significance. We’ll also explore Willkarakay, a military post above Patallacta. Afterward, we’ll enter the lush Wayllabamba valley, following the Cusichaca River(“happy bridge”). We’ll walk through the Andean forest and reach our first campsite in Wayllabamba(3,100m/10,170ft.).

Wayllabamba to Pacaymayu
Abra Warmihuañusca 4,215m / 13,829ft
After an early rise and breakfast, we will continue the day’s hike up the highest point on the Inca Trail, called Warmihuañusca or “dead woman’s pass” (4,215m/13,828ft). This morning hike is physically challenging, especially for those not used to high altitudes, but it’s also incredibly scenic. In the first part of the hike, we’ll walk for about 1.5 hours through thick vegetation until we reach a campsite called Three Stones, where we’ll take a short break. As we continue our ascent, the landscape will change as we enter the inter-Andean forests full of Unca trees. After that 2 hours of uphill hike, we will reach another campsite called Llulluchapampa (3,850m/12,631ft.), which is our lunch spot.
After lunch, we will continue our hike for about 2 hours to the highest point on the Inca Trail, Abra Warmihuañusca (the Dead Woman’s Pass) at (4,215m/13,828ft.). We will take plenty of photographs before descending to Pacaymayo Valley (3,500m/11,483ft.). The views from the Dead Woman’s Pass are marvelous where we get to see glaciers, valleys, and unending mountains. After descending for a few hours, we will reach our campsite for the day. Overnight Camping in Pacaymayu.

We will begin a 45-minute hike early in the morning after breakfast to climb yet another archaeological site, the Abra Runkurakay (3,970m/13,025ft.), which used to be a resting lodge for ancient travelers. From the top of the second pass, we begin descending towards Yanacocha, the Black Lagoon entering the cloud forest and passing through various bio-zones. Then we arrive at Sayacmarca, a beautiful complex at (3,624m/11,889ft.) and explore the area. After exploring the beautiful complex, we continue our hike to Chaquicocha (3,600m/11,811ft.) where we have lunch.

Wiñay Wayna to Machu Picchu; hike to Huayna Picchu & return to Cusco
Inti Punku 2,745m / 9,006ft
Today is our last hiking day and the wakeup call is very early at around 4:00, leading us to the “Inti Punku” or Sun Gate (2,730m/8,956ft.), which is the main entrance to the breathtaking Machu Picchu. This part of the trail is relatively easy, and it offers a fantastic spot to view Machu Picchu, especially if the weather is clear. From the Sun Gate, we will descend for almost an hour to arrive at the Guardian’s House from where we get to gaze at Machu Picchu (2,430m/7,972ft.) in all its grandeur. We will have a complete guided tour of Machu Picchu City that will take about 2 hours. During this tour, we will visit amazing places like the Inca Bridge, temples, and palaces.
If you choose, there’s an optional hike to Huayna Picchu (at an additional cost and must be booked in advance). In the afternoon, we’ll take a bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have lunch and receive your train tickets for the journey back to Cusco. Pricing for the 8-day hike to Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain is provided on request. Cost depends on season, group size, and any customization requested by the traveler.
The price bundles the classic Inca Trail trek with a dedicated Rainbow Mountain day hike, permits, guides, and camping equipment.
This trip is graded Moderate overall, combining the multi-day Inca Trail trek with a separate high-altitude day hike to Rainbow Mountain at 5,020m (16,470ft), where thinner air rather than technical terrain is the main challenge.
The Rainbow Mountain trail is mostly flat until a final ascent, so a relaxed pace is recommended at altitude.
The dry season from May to September is the best time for this trip, offering the clearest skies for photographing Rainbow Mountain’s colors and the best visibility at Machu Picchu. Shoulder months like April and October see fewer crowds with still-decent weather.
Rainbow Mountain’s colors are most vivid in clear, dry conditions, so cloudy or rainy days can mute the view. Read our full guide on Best Time to Hike Peru.
This itinerary runs 8 days, combining 2 days of Cusco and Sacred Valley sightseeing, the 4-day classic Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu, and a dedicated day trip to Rainbow Mountain before final departure.
The Rainbow Mountain excursion is a separate single-day hike added onto the standard Inca Trail schedule.
This trip suits reasonably fit beginners, since neither the Inca Trail nor Rainbow Mountain require technical skills, though the combination of a multi-day trek plus a separate high-altitude day hike calls for good general fitness and acclimatization.
Cusco acclimatization days at the start of the trip help prepare travelers for both high-altitude components.
The maximum altitude reached is 5,020m (16,470ft) at Rainbow Mountain, higher than the Inca Trail’s own high point of 4,215m (13,829ft) at the Dead Woman’s Pass, making Rainbow Mountain the more altitude-intensive day of the trip.
Both high points occur on separate days, giving the body some recovery time between them.
Yes, Inca Trail permits are required and must be booked through an authorized operator like Himalayan Glacier well in advance, ideally 3 to 6 months ahead, since daily permit numbers are limited by the Peruvian government.
Rainbow Mountain does not require the same limited permit system as the Inca Trail.
Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, is a striking multicolored peak formed by mineral-rich sedimentary layers, and it has become one of Peru’s most photographed natural landmarks alongside Machu Picchu, drawing hikers for its unique striped rock formations.
The colors are most vivid in clear morning light, which is why early departures are scheduled for this leg of the trip.
Altitude sickness risk is managed through Cusco acclimatization days before the Inca Trail begins, a measured pace recommended on the Rainbow Mountain ascent, and guide monitoring throughout both high-altitude components of the trip.
Hydration and a slow pace matter especially at Rainbow Mountain, since altitude gain there happens quickly on a single day hike.
Travelers stay in a hotel in Cusco before and after the trek, with camping at Wayllabamba, Pacaymayo, and Wiñay Wayna during the 4-day Inca Trail portion, and return to the Cusco hotel for the Rainbow Mountain day trip.
Rainbow Mountain is visited as a day trip from Cusco rather than an overnight stay near the mountain itself.
This 8-day trip follows the same 4-day Inca Trail trek as Himalayan Glacier’s standard Inca Trail itinerary, then adds a dedicated Rainbow Mountain day hike, making it the better choice for travelers who want both landmarks in a single visit.
Travelers who only want the Inca Trail without Rainbow Mountain can book the standalone Inca Trail Hike instead.
This trip pairs the classic Inca Trail with a Rainbow Mountain day hike, while the Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail Hike instead combines a longer, higher-altitude alternative trek through Salkantay with the same Inca Trail finish to Machu Picchu.
Choose this trip for Rainbow Mountain’s iconic scenery, or the Salkantay combination for a longer wilderness trekking experience.
After creating an account, you'll be able to track your payment status, track the confirmation and you can also rate the tour after you finished the tour.
