Dhulikhel (1,550m), a beautiful township throughout the year near Kathmandu Valley, is becoming a growing tourist destination for domestic and international visitors. Hence, it has been included in the itinerary list of almost all the tour operators promoting Nepal. The reasons behind its growing popularity are listed below.

  • Dhulikhel is situated just 30-km southeast of Kathmandu. Because of good highway connecting Kathmandu with Dhulikhel, it is very comfortable for travelers to visit this township. Upon reaching at this tourist’ beautiful spot visitors still feel away from urban hustle and bustle.
  • Dhulikhel is such a junction where two major highways—the B.P. Highway and Arniko Highway– meet. The B.P. Highway connects this green city with Sindhuli and the plain land of Terai whereas the Arniko Highway links Kathmandu to the Tibetan border town of Kodari.
  • One of the attractions of Dhulikhel is that this is a melting pot of a variety of communities such as the Newars, Brahmins, Chhetris, Tamangs and Dalits in Nepal. The historic town houses beautiful old houses and temples too.
  • Dhulikhel developed as a tourist destination for Tibet trippers as well as foreign travelers after the construction of the road in the mid 1960s. Since then, tourists have started staying overnight at the city while going to Tibet and coming back to Kathmandu.
  • Dhulikhel remained an ancient trading centre in between Nepal and Lhasa in for a long time. In the past, the Nepalese people would visit Tibet to bring home salt and gold, while the Tibetans used to come to Kathmandu to buy rice, chilies and other daily consumer goods.
  • With a favorable climate, visitors can get a unique experience by exploring various villages and scenic spots in and around Dhulikhel.
  • Another attraction of Dhulikhel is that one can have a superb view of mountains, lush green forests and surrounding rural settlements from the city.
  • More than 20 Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Annapurna (8,091m), Mt. Ganesh Himal (7,429m), Mt. Langtang (7,234m), Mt. Phuribichyachu (6,637m), Mt. Gaurishanker (7,134m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m) can be observed from different points of the city.
  • Because of the expansion of the community forests in and around Dhulikhel, bird watching and forest walk have now become additional attractions to visitors.
  • The 1,000 stone-paved ladders and a tall statue of the Lord Buddha in the ever green Shanti Ban near Dhulikhel lure many tourists. The Kali Temple located atop Devisthan hill is another tourist attraction.
  • Visitors to Dhulikhel can extend their trips to Panauti, Balthali and Panchkhal areas as well. These places are best for short hiking, trekking, nature walk, and cultural experience.
  • Adventure seekers in Nepal can enjoy short treks to several places like Nagarkot and Namo Buddha. Adventurers can explore thrilling rafting on the Sunkoshi and the Bhotekoshi rivers. They can also visit the Tibetan border to have hot spring bath. The temple of Palanchok Bhagawati is on the Palanchowk hillock where there is the idol of Goddess Bhagawati. The temple is just half an hour drive from Dhulikhel.
  • Tourists can extend their trips to Charikot and even to Jiri, which are other beautiful tourist spots located in Dolakha district. In a three-hour drive, tourists can reach Charikot from Dhulikhel, while it takes about four hours to get in Jiri.
  • As the number of visitors visiting Dhulikhel has been going up annually, more tourist hotels and resorts have been established in the city. Accommodation facilities ranging from budget class to luxury hotels are available there.
  • The city has now become a health and education tourist destination because of the Kathmandu University and the Dhulikhel Hospital.
  • Following the expansion of the road linking Kathmandu with Bhaktapur, more domestic travelers are now visiting Dhulikhel. The construction of a Fun Park and the monument of Lord Shiva near Sanga Bhanjyang has also added to the charm of Dhulikhel.
