Trek on the trails of Mt. Langtang and observe rich customs of the Tamang people who reside in the Langtang region
Tamang Heritage Trek is an exciting trek into the Himalayas that offers travelers a peek into the every-day lives of the Tamang people who are Nepalese mountain dwellers of the Langtang region. The 14-day trip begins in Kathmandu with visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Next, we drive to Syabrubesi and begin trekking into the mountaneous region. Throughout our journey we will be rewarded with outstanding views of the Himalayas and get acquainted with the culture and traditions of the Tamangs who live in close vicinity to the mighty Langtang.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)
Upon our arrival in the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, we will be greeted by a representative from Himalayan Glacier who will drop us off at our hotel. After checking in, we take a rest or visit Himalayan Glacier’s office. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan Glacier. For dinner, you will be served excellent authentic Nepalese cuisine which will introduce you to the Nepalese food culture.
Day 2: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation
Today after breakfast we start a guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu. Some of these landmarks are considered World Heritage Sites including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous 'Monkey Temple' (Swayambhunath) and Buddhist shrine (Bouddhanath) which is one of the largest stupas in the world. At noon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members. Himalayan Glacier briefs us regarding our trek as well as provides us an opportunity to ask any questions we may have regarding our upcoming adventure. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,550m/5,100ft): 8-9 hours
We leave Kathmandu in the morning for Syabrubesi, a village which is also a starting point for treks into the Langtang valley. Our journey will be on a winding road through frequent switchbacks. On a clear day we get to enjoy outstanding views of Manaslu, Annapurna and Ganesh Himal. We continue until we descend to the small village of Syabrubesi, the starting point of our trek. Overnight in Syabrubesi.
Day 4: Trek begins: Syabrubesi to Gatlang (2,200m/7,217ft.): 5 hours
Our trek starts from today. From Syabrubesi, we hike across the Goljung Village enjoying views of the Ganesh Himal, Shishapangma, Langtang Lirung and others. Gatlang is a small village on the hillside with traditional stone houses. Overnight at Gatlang.
Day 5: Gatlang to Tatopani (2607m/8550 ft): 6-7 hours
We begin today's trek with a descent to Thangbuche and soak-in magnificent views of the Ganesh Himal and Langtang Ranges along the way. Next, pass by the Chilime Hydropower dam and ascend until Tatopani. The name Tatopani literally means 'hot water' in Nepali owing to the natural hot springs there. However, the hot springs are no longer there after the earthquake that hit Nepal in April 2015.
Day 6: Tatopani to Thuman (2,400m/7,874 ft) via Brimdang and Nagthali: 6 hours
Today we trek from Tatopani to Thuman via Brimdang and Nagthali. Passing through the dense alpine forest, we reach the small Tamang settlement of Brimdang. From here, it’s a few hours walk uphill until Nagthali hill. Here, we enjoy the mesmerizing views of Langtang, Sanjen,Kerung and Ganesh Himal. Next, trek downhill to the Tamang village of Thuman and spend the night.
Day 7: Thuman to Briddim (2,345m/7,693 ft): 6 hours
Today, we trek to Briddim from Thuman via Lingling. Briddim is a Tibetan Buddhist village, ideally located on the lap of the Langtang Himal. Here, we visit the Dukchu Gomba monastery. In Briddim, we notice that most of the houses are built by stones and are inhabited mostly by people of Tibetan origin. Briddim in fact, resembles a typical Tibetan village on this side of Tibet.
Day 8: Briddim to Lama Hotel (2470m): 6 hours
Today, we trek from Briddim to Lama Hotel. The trail descends to Ghopche Khola which is a small stream. Then we ascend to Lama Hotel via Rimche. Lama Hotel is located on the banks of the Langtang River and surrounded by lush forests and amazing mountain vista. Overnight in Lama Hotel.
Day 9: Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3,430m/11,253ft): 6-7 hours
After breakfast, we embark on our trip to the Langtang Village. Our trail continues alongside dense forests. After climbing up steadily through the valley, we leave the tree line behind us. On the way, we also enjoy the marvelous views of Langtang Lirung, pass by water mills, prayer wheels and chortens adorned with sacred mounds of rocks with inscriptions carved on them.
Day 10: Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m/12,697ft): 4 hours
After breakfast, we leave Langtang village and walk through yak pastures. Today, we also pass the largest mani wall in Nepal which is made from stone with prayers written on them. It is believed that the prayers on the mani wall spreads around by blowing winds. We cross several wooden bridges before reaching Kanjin Gompa which is beautifully surrounded by the mighty Himalayas. We can take a walk around the Kanjin Gompa enjoying astounding views of glaciers, icefalls, birds and yaks.
Day 11: Trek back to Lama Hotel (2,380m/7,830ft): 4-5 hours
We trek back to the Lama Hotel. Since the trek is only downhill, it will only take us around 4 to 5 hours to reach our destination. It is a downhill trek through forests and alongside a beautiful mountain river. On the way we pass through the ethnic settlements of the Tamang people whose religious and cultural practices similar to the Tibetans. Overnight in Lama Hotel.
Day 12: Trek ends: Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi: 5 hours
Today is the last day of trekking. After breakfast, we trek down to Syabrubensi which will be an easy trek through lush green vegetation. After reaching Syabrubesi, we enjoy lunch and celebrate the completion of our trek.
Day 13: Drive to Kathmandu
After breakfast, we drive back to Kathmandu. After arriving in Kathmandu we take a rest at our hotel or stroll in the streets of Thamel, a popular tourist hub for some souvenir shopping. In the evening, there will be a farewell dinner hosted by Himalayan Glacier to celebrate the successful completion of our trip. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 14: Final departure
Our adventure in Nepal comes to an end today! A Himalayan Glacier representative will drop us off at the airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight. On our way home, we have plenty of time to plan our next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
Your safety is of paramount concern while traveling with Himalayan Glacier. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary; however, since this adventure entails travelling in remote mountainous regions, we cannot guarantee that we will not deviate from it. Weather conditions, health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters, etc., can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required.

The Trekking Group
For Tamang Heritage Trek, there will be one leader, assistant leader (4 trekkers: 1 assistant guide) and Sherpa porters for luggage carrying (2 trekkers: 1 porter). This arrangement ensures that even if anybody in the group gets sick or is unable to carry on, the trip can still go ahead as planned for the rest of the group. We can run the trek for groups of any size, but usually, it is a maximum of twelve people as we've found this to be the optimum size for a successful trip.
It is a condition upon joining any of Himalayan Glacier's trips that all clients be insured for comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and treatment costs). Please note that we don't arrange or sell insurance.
We will be staying at Hotel Moonlight
in Kathmandu and teahouses during the trek. All accommodations are on twin-shared basis. Single supplement will be served on request and will cost an additional $250. Himalayan Glacier will arrange rooms with attached washrooms; however, teahouses in some places only have shared washing and toilet facilities. Also note that single rooms are readily available in Kathmandu and the trekking regions at lower elevation but it might be difficult to find them at higher elevations.
Breakfast will be served in Kathmandu whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be provided during the trek. While trekking, we can enjoy Nepalese food as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.). Breakfast and dinner will be served from the lodge menu where we spend the night whereas lunch will be served on the way to the next destination. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners for guests.

The most significant thing that makes this trek, enjoyable and memorable is the skilled, experienced, courteous and helpful leader(s) and the crew members with ability of operating our days in the mountain smoothly. Our trip will be led by the best and most professional leaders. All of Himalayan Glacier's leaders are carefully selected on the basis of their appropriate experience, leadership skills and personal aptitude. With an objective of sustaining local communities, Himalayan glacier only employs local staff who have adequate knowledge about culture, ecosystem, flora, fauna, geography, and history of their local region/s. Though often overlooked, it's no exaggeration to say the entire trekking and expedition industry in Nepal is built on the back of hard working local porters. It is their tireless efforts carrying supplies, equipment and baggage that make journeying to these remote areas possible. Therefore, we are firmly committed to porter rights. We make sure that all our porters are well treated, well paid and we provide the level of shelter, clothing and footwear that these harsh environments demand. Porters who become sick are treated with the same care and attention as other team members and we have previously used helicopters - at our expense - to rescue porters from dangerous situations. We support the work of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), making our resources available to them to help improve the working conditions of the porters. The Langtang Region is stunningly beautiful, but equally fragile. Future generations have just as much of a right to appreciate it as we do and so the tourism industry has an obligation to protect and preserve it. We employ a 'zero impact' policy on the natural environment and the traditional communities that live there. We enforce a number of do's and don'ts, and our experienced staff can advise you on how to minimize your impact.
Tamang Heritage Trek’s itinerary is planned with a high degree of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Going up at higher altitudes too fast causes a medical condition serious enough to result in death. The higher the altitude, the less oxygen will be in the air. For example, at an altitude above of 5000m, there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Therefore, our body needs many days to adapt to an environment with less-oxygen.
Himalayan Glacier advises guest(s) with known heart, lungs or blood diseases to consult their doctor before traveling. Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorders are symptoms of AMS. Check out "Altitude illness" by Dr Jim Duff
. . Himalayan Glacier's itineraries are designed to try to prevent AMS as much as possible. But, it is important to remember that some visitors are more vulnerable than others.
Physical Condition & Experience Requirements
Tamang Heritage Trek is a moderate trek suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 5-7 hours a day with a light day pack. Walking in higher altitudes is more physically demanding than walking in lower altitudes; however, if we are in excellent health with average physical fitness and have a positive attitude, self confidence and strong determination, we can accomplish this trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for some weeks prior to the trip is a good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. It is vital for participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases to consult their doctor before taking the trip. It is also advised that you inform Himalayan Glacier about your medical condition before booking the trek.
Best Time to Travel
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best months for this trip. Although this trip can be taken during winter, the cold temperature might not be suitable for everyone.
Equipments & Packing List
This list is a guideline to help you pack for your adventure. Also understand that the items listed below will vary a little according to the season and the trek duration. Those items marked by an asterisk (*) are provided by Himalayan Glacier inclusive in the service. The weight limit for your luggage is 33 pounds or 15 kg. Remember that your luggage will be carried by your porter but you are required to carry a day-pack (with your valuables or anything important) on your own. We also suggest that you pack only what is necessary.
