Trek up to Mt. Manaslu base camp, cross the Larkya La pass and admire the rich biodiversity of the region

Manaslu circuit trek begins by sightseeing of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu to trekking in the beautiful Manaslu region. While on the trip we get to marvel at the magnificent views of Mt. Manaslu (8163m), the eight tallest mountain in the world, coupled with a chance to witness the rich local heritage and biological diversity of the region.

The highest point in this trek is the ‘Larkya La Pass’ which is widely believed to be one of the most dramatic pass crossing the Himalayas. Like all Himalayan Glacier’s itineraries this trek also ensures adequate time for proper acclimatization. Much of the trek involves walking on mountain trails, and is within the capabilities of people with good cardiovascular fitness. Still, it is important to note that trekking at altitudes above 3,000m/10,000ft is more demanding on the body than walking at low elevations.

With its remoteness and secluded solidarity, it is believed to be in stark contrast to trekking in the Annapurna region making ‘Manaslu Circuit Trek’ a first choice for those who prefer to become one with nature.

The narrow trail makes some minor ups and downs and eventually crosses the Tharo Khola and reaching Khorlabesi. After a few more ascends and descends we come across a small Hotspring in Tatopani. From the hot spring, we climb over another ridge, then cross the Budhi Gandaki on a suspension bridge. At this juncture, we climb on a wide, well-crafted staircase, then across a landslide and over a ridge to Dobhan. Upon crossing a suspension bridge over the Yaru Khola, we climb the stone stairs and then drop to the river and again climb more stone stairs to Tharo Bharyang. Crossing the west bank of the Budhi Gandaki, we climb over a ridge, trek along the river and then climb towards the village of Jagat. Overnight in Jagat.

Jagat to Deng

We begin today’s trek by climbing over a rocky ridge to Salleri, and then descend to Sirdibas. The valley widens a bit as the trail continues up to Ghatta Khola. We further continue walking upstream to a long suspension bridge in Philim, a large Gurung village. The trail turns north just above the lowest house in the village and stays on a fairly level trail as it crosses millet fields to Ekle Bhatti. The route now enters a steep, uninhabited gorge. At this point, we descend to the grassy land slopes, cross the Budhi Gandaki, then trek along the west bank for a while, then cross to the east bank and then back again. As we continue through the trail the valley widens and we pass through bamboo forests to the Deng Khola.  Upon crossing the Khola, we reach the tiny village of Deng. Overnight in Deng.

Deng to Namrung

After a brief walk beyond Deng, we cross the Budhi Gandaki and climb to Rana at 1910m. From the bridge, we climb a bit to join a trail from Bhi, then head west up the Budhi Gandaki valley. The trail also passes through forests and mani where we turn towards a corner that contours to Ghap. Even though there is another route, we take the route through Prok village. Prok village has a viewpoint for a beautiful sight of Siringi Himal. We further cross the Budi Gandaki several times today and come across several gompas en route. The trail follows the river upstream through a dense forest. After crossing the river at an impressive spot where it thunders down a narrow gorge, the forest becomes less dense and the trail is fine again. The pleasant walk continues and after a last steep climb we reach Namrung. Overnight in Namrung.

We climb steadily and pass through forests and reach Lihi, a fine village with many chortens and barley terraces. The trail drops and crosses the side valley of Simnang Himal with Ganesh Himal always close by. We further pass through Sho, Lho and Shyala villages before reaching Sama Village. We enjoy extraordianary views of Mt. Manasly from Lho village and also explore the famous Ribung Gompa. In Shyala village we will be surrounded by high mountains like Himal Chuli and Peak 29 (Ngadi Chuli) to the left, Manaslu and large glaciers straight ahead, and other snow summits to the right, and at the far end stands Ganesh Himal. Today’s journey ends in Samagaon where we spend the night.

Samagaon - Pungyen gompa - Samagaon

We spend the day at Samagaon both for rest and acclimatization. Today, we get acquainted with the rich Sherpa culture. We enjoy the sight of thousands of mani stones with Buddhist texts and pictures and the Sherpa women clad in traditional clothes and ornaments. On a little hill near the Sama village is an old Gompa (Pungyen Gompa), a monastery with great views of the glacier. It is named after Manaslu, Pungyen means bracelet, a good description of the two peaks. It was destroyed a year after the first unsuccessful Japanese attempt to climb Manaslu. The locals believed that the climb angered the gods, and when the Japanese came back a year later they met with a lot of resistance that they had to give up their attempt. They were finally successful in 1959. Overnight in Samagaon.

Today, we descend to the Budhi Gandaki River, that has turned north and follow it to a bridge over a side stream. The trail to the left leads to the Manaslu Base camp. The Larkya la Trail passes several mani walls as the valley begins to widen. It is an easy trail on a shelf above the river passing the juniper and birch forests of Kermo Kharka. We drop off the shelf, cross the Budhi Gandaki on a wooden bridge and climb steeply onto a promontory between two forks of the river. From a stone arch we can view a large white kani. After a short climb, we reach a valley on the north side of the Larkya Glaciers from where we can enjoy great views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. Finally, we walk across moraines of the glacier, making a gradual ascent which becomes steeper only in the last section of the pass. From the pass, there are outstanding views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kangguru and the huge Annapurna II. It is a longer day than usual to Bimtang, but to walk into these low pastures with the evening mist coming in with Mt. Manaslu looming close by is an overwhelming experience. Overnight in Bimthang.

From a ridge at Bimthang, we can enjoy great views of Mt. Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, Himlung Himal and Cheo Himal. We descend further and cross a high pasture (Sangure Kharka) followed by a bridge over Dudh Khola. We walk through rhododendron forest and follow a trail through a narrow valley until we reach the highest cultivated land of the valley at Karche, 2785 meters. We pass across fields before making a steep climb over a ridge. The trail comes off the ridge in a big, sweeping arc to the river bank at 2580m. A short distance beyond is the village of Gho. Due to yesterday’s tiredness we might take an overnight rest at Gho but better lodges are available at Tilije, so Himalayan Glacier recommends we stay at Tilije. Overnight in Tilije Village.

Meals

All Meals on full board basis will be served during manalsu trekking whereas only breakfast will be served in Kathmandu including welcome and farewell dinner. During trekking, three meals a day will be served from the tea house or lodge menus or local homes. Each day’s dinner and breakfast are taken in the same place that we stay the night. Lunch will be taken in a tea house on the way to the destination. Please be informed that the Manaslu region does not have a well-established tourist infrastructure as in the Annapurna or Everest region (and this is the main attraction of this region). Therefore, a variety of foods will not be available or possible. We mainly eat Tibetan bread, dal bhat, tsampa porridge and other simple local foods. Himalayan Glacier suggests we be ready for a remote experience.

Accommodation

We will be accommodated in Hotel Moonlight or Similar in Kathmandu and tea houses during the trek. Note that the Manaslu region is a newly developed trekking destinations therefore the facilities in the teahouses will be very basic. All accommodations are on twin-shared basis. Single supplement is available and will cost an additional amount of USD 290.

Experience Required

Manaslu Circuit Trek usually requires 5-6 hours of walking everyday and some days even up to 8-10 hours- such as in high passes. Himalayan Glacier suggests we get prepared with about 12 km of walking or jogging exercise every day before 3 months of our Around Manaslu Trekking Trip so we will be able to walk in physically demanding high-altitude conditions and remote areas for many days for hours at a time. To join the Manaslu Circuit and to complete it successfully and enjoyably, we must have: lots of willpower, ability to tolerate harsh conditions, very high level of fitness and good health. Medical and evacuation expenses are the responsibility of the participant. It is also important that we consult our doctor for vaccination and other medical requirements for our trip.

Acclimatization

Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary is planned with high degree of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Going up at higher altitude too fast causes a medical condition serious enough to kill. Higher the altitude, lesser the oxygen in the air. For example, at an altitude above of 5000m, there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Therefore, our body needs many days to adapt the less-oxygen environment. Our manaslu circuit itineraries generally allow sufficient time to acclimatize. So, for a safe trek, it is absolutely essential to allow sufficient time for acclimatization. Sensible planning is therefore required to minimize the risk of AMS. Himalayan Glacier advises especially the guest(s) with known heart, lung or blood diseases to consult their doctor before traveling. Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorders are symptoms of AMS. Check out “Altitude illness” by Dr Jim Duff. Himalayan Glacier’s itineraries are designed to try to prevent AMS as much as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderately challenging trek. The trails are generally manageable, but the long trekking days and high altitude make it physically demanding. Even without prior trekking experience, you can complete the trek if you have good physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and the support of experienced guides. With steady pacing and preparation, many first-time trekkers successfully enjoy this rewarding Himalayan journey.
This Manaslu trek is best done in pre-monsoon season i.e. from March to May and post-monsoon season i.e. from late September to December. In general, any time during October, November, April and May are considered the best months. Other recommended months for this trek are September, December and March. We do not recommend doing this trek during the rest of the months. Due to heavy snowfall in January and February it becomes very risky to cross the Larkya La Pass. Likewise, heavy rainfall causing flood and landslide can be experienced during June, July and August, so it is better to avoid these months.
Absolutely yes! Under normal circumstances, our booked trips are guaranteed to run. You will still be doing your trek even if other trekkers cancel their trip. This is the reason why Himalayan Glacier is different from other agencies, who usually cancel their whole trip a month or even a week before the trip date. We are a tailor-made company and the number of participants does not stop our operation. If your trip has been canceled by your operator and you are in a last-minute stress, remember to find us to sort out your trip decisions. Please feel free to book your stress-free holidays with us. Unless there is a situation which is out of control such as a political riot, natural disaster, pandemic, epidemic or weather catastrophes, our trips are 100% guaranteed to run.
Himalayan Glacier offers a lifetime deposit policy which allows you the flexibility to transfer your deposit to anyone or any other trip. If you wish to cancel your booked trips, certain cancelation charges apply. Please visit our booking terms and conditions for detailed information.
Rest assured that you will be in good hands with our experienced trek leaders, who have multiple years of experience trekking in Nepal. All of our guides, known as Himalayan Glacier dedicated Guides, are locals with a deep understanding of the mountain, its people, culture, health, hygiene, and most importantly, your safety. They are fluent in English and will be able to communicate effectively with you throughout the trek. Our guides are passionate about their work and will ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
The accommodation on the Manaslu Trek comprises clean huts, teahouses, guesthouses, and upgraded hotels at some places. These hotels have room heaters and en-suite toilet and bathroom facilities. Each year, the lodge owners are adding additional facilities and trying to provide more comfort to their clients. When you book a trip with Himalayan Glacier, we will always book the best available lodges and guesthouses on the route throughout the entire trek. Please visit our accommodation page for more details.
