Trip Introduction

Join our marvelous package in the Himalayas of the mystical land of Nepal that combines nature, culture and adventure in a nutshell. The trip combines sightseeing tour of the ancient Buddhist and Hindu historic places, white-water rafting adventure in one of world's highest rivers, the Bhote Kosi, a trek into the Langtang Himalayas, and wildlife excursion in the subtropical jungle of Chitwan. This exciting trip takes you deep into the Himalayas north of Kathmandu amidst truly breathtaking middle and high altitude forests and alpine meadows that give you an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility. Take refuge in the world of cool forests, rushing rivers, high and wild places, and awesome, timeless icy peaks. After our initial sightseeing tour of Kathmandu and rafting adventure in one of world's highest river of Bhotekoshi, we set off for the drive to Dhunche where we begin our trek. The ride passes through twists and turns over several ridges before descending to the subtropical banks of the Trisuli Khola. Beyond Trisuli Bazaar the track extends all the way to Dhunche. From Dhunche we start our trek.

We continue our trek into the Langtang Valley leaving behind the leafy trees, passing through the conifers, and finally giving way to alpine scrub with dwarf rhododendrons. Passing through some oak forest on the way, reach Singh Gompa through some fine old mixed forest. Ultimately, the juniper and rhododendron scrub finally gives way to the barren rocky slopes of Gosainkund lake area. Continuing up to the Laurebina Pass, descend down the pass through the rocky landscapes to the ground vegetation. Cross many interesting ravines, rivers, juniper and rhododendrons, eventually reaching Ghopte. Finally leave the Ghopte area, continuing through rhododendron forest to Tharepati.  After Tharepati, the trail crosses a number of ridges and passes through several small villages.  Eventually we reach Shivapuri Ridge and a steep descent takes us to Sundarijal, the trek end point.  A short bus ride will take us to Kathmandu, and the next day we continue our journey to Chitwan for jungle adventure. After spending two days with the wildlife in the sub-tropical jungles of Chitwan, we head back to Kathmandu.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01:  Arrival and Transferred to the Hotel (1300m/4,264ft)

After completing your custom formalities (Visa, etc) pick up your luggage and look for our representative with a Himalayan Glacier Trekking display board at the arrival gate. You will be then transferred to Hotel Shanker or a similar category hotel. After check in, you can take a rest, hang around in the city, visit our office - it all depends upon your interests and condition. In the evening we will organize a Welcome Dinner at an excellent traditional Nepalese Restaurant where you will enjoy a Nepalese cultural program as well as a fine meal.
Day 02:  Kathmandu, sightseeing
Today, after breakfast, we start a guided tour to four of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu.  Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the palaces of the medieval Kings who ruled over the then Kathmandu Kingdom. Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingum, or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The Aryaghat alongside Pashupati and on the banks of the Bagmati River is a famous funeral site for the Hindus. The Buddhists shrine of Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world, and one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist destinations in Kathmandu.  The area of Boudhnath is also famous for over 50 Tibetan Gompas or monasteries.
Day 03:  Rafting at Bhote-Kosi, 1st day
We get to our rafting point resort the Borderlands resort about 210 Km from Kathmandu and about 4 hrs hours' drive to the Nepal-Tibet Border. The rafting will take place in the Bhotekoshi River, one of world's highest rivers. The drive passes through mountain villages, rivers, jungles, waterfalls, and high passes.  Spectacular views of high Himalayan mountains including Ganesh Himal, Langtang, etc After arriving at the rafting point, check into the Borderland resort. There will be some briefing about the rafting adventure by the rafting guides. The rafting is mostly of class 2 to class 4.
Day 04:  Rafting at Bhote-Kosi, 2nd day
Today we will get a little more adventurous with white water rafting. Also acquaint yourserlf with Canyoning - which involves abseiling, sliding, jumping, climbing and swimming.  The people at the Borderlands are quite experienced with extensive knowledge and expertise on various aspects of watersports. Experience the thrills of passing through the sheer cliffs and slides to pounding waterfalls. Feel the sensation of the adrenalin buzz that shoots up in your bloodstream while leaping off waterfalls and sliding down glass-smooth rocks. Another aspect of water sports in the Bhotekoshi is the opportunity to enjoy forest and river areas which is not possible in any other way. In the evening we head toward Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 05:  Transfer from Kathmandu to Dhunche (1950m/6396 ft)
After breakfast, drive from Borderland to Kathmandu. Taking our lunch in Kathmandu, we drive further to Dhunche, our trek start point.  The road passes along mountain ridge with sheer cliffs extending above and below.  Small rivers flow from the cliff above and across the road.  Boulders balance precariously above us; the road is built out over a sheer drop off below. Marvel at the scenery and congrat yourself for braving the drive to Dhunche. Dhunche is a small picturesque village perched between rice and wheat fields along the Trisuli River.
Day 06:  Trekking to Singh Gompa(3584m/10,675ft, 6-7 hours)
Our trek begins this morning. We hike up through the steep mountain trails. Cross the Trishuli River. Initially, the trail follows the north side of the river. Then we start our climb on a steep ridge. The trail passes through the forests of fir and rhododendron, ascending steeply.  Another climb to Dimsa.  Arrive at Singh Gompa. Although a Buddhist monastery, you will not find monks at Singh Gompa.  There is a cheese factory at Singh Gompa.
Day 07:  Trekking to Gosaikund lakes (4,380m/14,366ft, 6-7 hours)
Trek for about 3 hours to Lauribina Yak. It's relatively easy walk in the beginning.  Follow a rugged trail with dramatic views of Himal Chuli (7893m) Manaslu (8156m,) and Ganesh Himal (7406m). We climb higher through oaks, pines and rhododendron. Leaving the treeline behind, climb higher into a landscape of juniper and alpine shrubs.  Arrive at Lauribina Yak. It's still another 3 hours walk from Lauribina Yak to Gosaikunda. Enjoy the views of snow peaks including the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges. Discover more than 10 Himalayan Lakes in the Gosaikunda area including Saraswati and Bhiarav kund lakes. The region is also a famous pilgrimage both for the Hindus & the Buddhists.
Day 08:  Trekking to Ghopte (3440m/11,283ft, 6-7 hours) via Lauberina La pass (4610m/15,120ft)
Climb through the rugged landscapes enjoying the views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Lagtang Lirung among other. We get closer to another lake, the Surya Kund. Cross the Laurebina La(4610 m) pass, which is the highest point on the trek. After crossing the Lauribina La pass, descend down the trail through stone path and forest. Walking a few more uphill and downhill trails through junipers and rhododendrons, we head down to Phedi a small settlement by a gushing waterfall, then on to Ghopte, just over the ridge.  Ghopte is a name in Nepali which means an overhanging cliff, a perfect name for the place.
Day 09:  Trekking to Kutumsang (2621m/8,596ft, 4-5 hours)
Climb higher through the alpine forest. Down upon the hill zone and the rhododendrons - we continue along the forest path climbing over boulders and tree roots. Climbing still higher through the pine forest and going walking past numerous ups and downs, we arrive at Tharepati, an interesting place on a high ridge. From Tharepati, we descend down again through fir and rhododendron forests on more level trails and with occasional surprise views of the snowy Langtang Himalayas. Enjoy the splendid views of the Mount Dorje Lakpa.  On the way to Kutumsang which lies in the saddle of two hills.
Day 10:  Trekking to Chisopani (2194m/7,196ft, 5-6 hours)
After breakfast, we pass the hill top through temperate forests. Our walk now mostly involves going further downhill through increasing forests.  Descend to Gul Bhanjyang. Gul Bhanyang is a bustling little hill village.  The trail now becomes wider. Pass Chipling and then descend down further through villages and terraced hill sides.  Climb to Thodang Betini. Descend again down to Pati Bhanjyang (1860m) with terraced hillside. Climbing again a little higher, we finally arrive at Chisopani. Chisopani Village, which means cool water, is the gateway from Langtang and Helambu region trekking. From Chisopani, enjoy the great views of the entire Kathmandu valley.
Day 11:  Trekking to Sundarijal (5-6 hours), transfer to Kathmandu (1300m/4,264ft)
Trek past the lush oak and rhododendron forests. Arrive at the pass of Borlang Bhanjyang (2440m). From the Borlang Bhanjyang, we descend down a stone path through forests and villages. A continuous descent brings us to Mulkharka. From Mulkharka an easy descent along the water pipeline brings us to Sundarijal. Our trek ends at Sundarijal. From there, an hour's drive takes us back to Kathmandu again.
Day 12:  Transfer from Kathmandu to Chitwan (185km, 5 hours)
We take an early morning breakfast and drive to Chitwan, 185 kilometers from Kathmandu and a 5 hour's drive into the mountains. All the way we descend down along the winding road on the banks of the Trishuli River. After checking in to the hotel and getting refreshed you will be briefed about full nature programs by our nature guide. Then we head on for activities. There will be a guided village walk and a walk on the banks of the Rapti River to watch the charming sunset views in the sub-tropical jungle. We also visit the elephant breeding center where, if lucky, you may see mother elephant breast feeding its baby. In the evening dinner with cultural program by ethnic tribal people with their stick dancing and tribal drums. Overnight at Chitwan.
Day 13:  Full day of Jungle Safariat in Chitwan National Park

You can do a number of activities here - an elephant safari, a nature walk, bird watching, a jungle drive or a canoe trip. Acclimatization

Our Langtang Trek itinerary is planned with a high degree of minimization of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Going up too fast causes a medical condition serious enough to kill. The higher the altitude the less oxygen there is in the air. Top of Tserko Ri (5,000m/16,404ft) and Crossing Laurebina La (4,609m/15,121ft), for example, there is 45% less oxygen than at sea level. Your body needs many days to adapt to this so for a safe trek it absolutely essential to allow for sufficient time for acclimatization. Sensible planning is therefore required to minimize the risk of AMS, which Himalayan Glacier Itinerary assure to prevent your risk. We advise specially the guest(s) with known heart or lungs or blood diseases to consult their doctor before traveling. Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorder are symptoms of AMS.

Check out "Altitude illness" by Dr Jim Duff.

Himalayan Glacier's itineraries are designed to try to prevent AMS but it is important to remember, some people can be more susceptible than others.

Leader(s) & Staff Arrangements

  • Intensive Wilderness First Aid - KEEP (Kathmandu Environmental Educational Project)
  • Trekking Guide Training - Nepal Government's Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation department of Hotel Management & Tourism Training Centre of Nepal.
  • Eco Trekking Workshop & Adventure Meet - TAAN (Trekking Agents Association Of Nepal)
  • English Language - KEEP
  • Conservation & Biodiversity - KEEP
  • Rock & Ice Climbing & Mountaineering (optional) - Nepal Mountaineering Association

Our Trek Leaders obviously speak the English language but consider this is not our mother language and this enables a HGT traveler to pick up and use a few of the local greetings and get first hand experience of the local culture. The guides and porters know the route direction like the back of their hand, they practice the local culture themselves and they are extremely passionate about their country and it shows.

Our operation is smooth as a safety concern; there will be one Leader, one assistance leader and one sherpa porter on each group of two. This ensure if in case one get sick, it would not disturb the itinerary, the trip still running as plan as in itinerary. And please understand that our group start from 2 and maximum it goes up to 10 which is good team to communicate and facilitate in every manner.

Porters Protection: Each trekker is allowed his/her gear bag weighted not exceeding 15kgs/33 pounds that Himalayan Glacier Trekking strongly stand on porters rights and solely against any exploitation on it's operation. And we are closely working with IPPG (International Porters Progress Group)

Responsible tourism practice: Trekking are gently in the Himalayas during the recent days, areas like Everest, Annapurna & Langtang. We therefore do our best to reduce minimal impact on each trip to the mountain and all Himalayan Glacier trips aim for 'zero footprint' impact on the natural environment and the people who live off it's resources. We enforce a number of do's and don'ts for our customers and staff when out in the wilderness. Himalayan Glacier Trekking and Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) had done some clean up campaign in the past and support its other environment awareness activities. read more...
