The Festival of Holi: Celebrating colors

Vibrant colors, groups of people going around merrily and splashing water or colors on one another make Holi one of the joyous festival of Nepal. Then there is the gathering of friends and relatives along with delicious delicacies to indulge in making it even more remarkable.

With the onset of spring, one eagerly anticipates ‘Holi’- the festival of color and the unlimited fun that comes with it. Considered as one of the most ecstatic and exuberant festival of Nepal, Holi is observed every year on the day after full moon in early March and glorifies good harvest and fertility of the land. The new crop refills the stores in every household and perhaps such abundance accounts for the lively merriment during Holi. It also symbolizes the victory of virtue over evil. It is a festival of radiance celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy throughout Nepal. This animated festival is also associated with the immortal love of Krishna and Radha, renowned gods from Hindu mythology.

Holi is best celebrated with colored powder and water which are riotously dispensed as a reminder of the cooling monsoon days to come while celebrating the beginning of spring at the same time. People paint themselves and anyone within range with vibrant colors and throw colorful powder, water at each other and revel with friends and family. The excitement is heightened when people chase around each other until and unless you get drenched to the skin with color and water. Apart from the usual fun with colors and water, Holi is also marked by vibrant processions which are accompanied by folk songs, dances and a general sense of abandoned vitality. So if you wish to experience collective feeling of euphoria and togetherness spread as a colorful cloud, Nepal is the ultimate destination for infinite joy and mirth, fun and play, music and dance, and of course, lots of bright colors!
