EU film fest in Kathmandu to ‘Celebrate Womanhood’

Diplomatic missions and cultural institutions of the European Union (EU) based in Kathmandu and Delhi are organising a four-day ‘European Union Film Festival’ at the QFX Kumari Hall-2 at Kamal Pokhari from 20 to 23 Feb, 2014 under the theme ‘Celebrating Women’.

As the theme suggests, the movies are based on the life of European women from sixteen different European Union Member States – UK, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Netherland and Sweden, according to a press statement issued by the EU Delegation to Nepal.

The festival showcases the highs and lows faced by European women and aims at creating solidarity for the protection and promotion of women’s rights. The movies are masterpieces of contemporary European cinematographic art.

‘Six Days,’ one of the seventeen movies being screened at the festival has been produced by the ‘Kivinna till Kivinna Foundation’ based in Sweden with the funding from EU Instrument for Stability. The movie is a universal story of women’s courage and survival in the aftermath of war and highlights the works of three women’s rights activists Lanja (Journalist in Iraq), Nelly (Social Worker in Liberia) and Maia (Health Worker in Abkhazia, breakaway faction of Georgia).

According to the organisers, there will be four screenings each day, starting from 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:30 hrs. Free tickets can be booked two days ahead for each day’s show by logging on to qfxcinemas.com.
