Although Langtang National Park (LNP) is considered rich in wildlife, the authorities concerned have not conducted intensive study on the birds found inside the park for years.
Due to the lack of a timely study, the park management has been compelled to rely on a report prepared 13 years back.
“The bio-diversity in any park may witness drastic changes in a short period of time, and not a single serious study on birds has been conducted in the park for more than a decade,” admits Assistant Conservationist at the park, Ramdev Chaudhary.
Wildlife experts suggest that there should be at least one survey every three years to gain in-depth information on the wildlife.
“As a matter of fact, we don´t have any concrete report on the habitation of birds inside the park; nor have we conducted their census. But we are pretty sure that number of new bird species has definitely increased here,” adds Chaudhary.
When asked about the reason behind the lack of study, park officials blamed the government for the situation. “Studying rich diversity of birds is not possible without the government´s assistance. Such a study requires substantial financial and technical support,” says Chaudhary.
He further emphasized on the need of advance technology and experts to conduct the study.
LNP is known as one of the best habitats and favored resting place for migratory birds from Siberia. A survey conducted in 2003 suggested that there were a total of 315 species of birds in the park.
Chaudhary further informs that a three-month study of birds they conducted recently found six new species of birds in the park.
“It was a fruitful short study. But, we need conduct an extensive study of at least 12 months to ascertain the real conditions of birds found in the park,” said Chaudhary.
