Artists on a journey to discover Lo Manthang

In exciting news for art lovers, a group of artists from Kathmandu will be heading to Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang today from Pokhara for a workshop. This art workshop, ‘Fragments of Mustang’, is being attended by artists Erina Tamrakar, Sunita Rana, Bidhata KC, Bipana Maharjan, Puja Maharjan and photographer Sajana Shrestha.

It is part of a project by Manang Youth Society where the society hopes to promote different parts of the country through art. The project will also be providing a platform for artists to grasp the diversity of the country and show their work.

According to Tripple P Gurung, President of Manang Youth Society, the trip will take a total of nine days. “The whole purpose of this workshop is to bring Nepal closer to the common Nepalis. We’ll be heading to Jomsom on Sunday from here and we’ll be visiting many places in between our destination where the artists can take in the culture and landscape of the region,” said Gurung, who is funding the workshop himself.

The group will be hiking and traveling by jeep to their destination and during their visit to the different villages of Mustang, they’ll be interacting with local people as well as artists from the region. The artists will also have the opportunity to observe the annual festival of Tiji celebrated in Lo Manthang which takes place from May 26 to 28.

“It’s a great opportunity and we’re excited,” says artist Bipana Maharjan, adding, “Meeting new people, exposure to new places and different cultures enhances the creative experience.”

The workshop will culminate with an exhibition of the artists’ impressions of their trip.
